King Kamehameha - Origin of Kamehameha Attack

Quite possibly the most famous word ever uttered in DBZ, and certainly the most widely-known attack, the Kamehameha is loved by many, and has found its way into all of our hearts. It is a devastating beam of energy that never seems to falter, and always gets the job done. Surely though, you must have stopped and thought about where this word came from, there's no way that anyone could have made it up off the top of their head is there? Of course not, there's a story behind everything, and this page should tell you the story behind this interesting attack.

It started when Akira Toriyama was attempting to think of a name for an attack, and his wife suggested the Kamehameha. Utilizing this strike of genius, Toriyama immediately put it in, wisely abiding by what his intelligent wife said. She had obviously heard of King Kamehameha the first, and quite liked the name. Anyway, I'll bet you're all gagging to know who this King was, and you want some background information on him, so I'll give you the privilege of knowing.

Born in 1758, and dying in 1819, this triumphant King had an eventful life, if a short one. At the time of Kamehameha's birth, there were many fierce leaders, each seeking the same thing - leadership of the Hawaiian islands. Amongst these leaders emerged a supreme being, a man dubbed "The great", a man who laid claim to the throne after winning many a violent, ferocious, and bloody battle. This man was called King Kamehameha I, and he became the ruler in 1810.

Despite his brutal fighting, and his malicious attitude in terms of warfare, Kamehameha turned out to be an exceedingly good leader, containing many qualities including being both wise and just. Under him and his government, the people and island of Hawaii prospered, and its influence with surrounding neighbors grew as it finally became a landmark worthy of note.

Three statues of the righteous King have been constructed, each with a short tale behind it. The first was made to honor Kamehameha, made of gold and bronze but it sunk along with the ship that carried it as it was being exported from Germany to Honolulu, sinking near the Falkland islands. With everyone assuming that this was a huge loss, the sculpture of the sunk statue merely made another one, as he still had the original mould. This was installed in Honolulu in February of 1883. Meanwhile though, the first statue had been salvaged, and was installed 3 months later, near Kamehameha's birthplace. The final one was composed fairly recently, once again using the original mould, and has been erected (No childish jokes please) in the Hall of Columns in Washington during April of 1969.

The statues aren't the only reminiscent of the King, as there is a whole day on the calendar year to celebrate this Hawaiian legend. It is on June 11th, and was decreed that it should go ahead by Kamehameha V, in 1872. It is celebrating with a combination of parades and floats. Obviously this has changed over the years, gradually building up to these big festivals. Another way that people celebrate it is by throwing leis (Those flower necklaces) on the statue of Kamehameha I in Honolulu.

Well, I hope I've told you everything that you could ever want to know about this guy, and I'm pretty sure it's the most comprehensive guide that you'll find on the internet.
