Mandrew's Chibicon Review

The Beginning

Saturday afternoon. Doing some homework, playing some video game, doing some internet, forgetting to do my site job (updating, that is) but around 4:30 the time has come to leave. I take off in my car and speed to my friend's house. He jumped right in and we took off for Montgomery College, where a so called, "Chibicon" (only four hours) would take place. The whole reason I came to Chibicon was a man named Chris Patton. Chris Patton is a man who voice acts for ADV and now a good friend of mine. I had been talking with him for about two weeks, when he asked me about Chibicon. I told him to sign me up right away, and within a week, Chibicon had e-mailed me back saying to come on down. Well, anyway, it took us about 30 minutes (plus 15 for gas and finding the college) to get there and we finally found a spot to park and made our way in.

The First Hour

It took us a while to find a way in, mostly because there were arrows everywhere to tell us where to go and what to do. As soon as I saw some Pocky boxes on the ground, which came more and more frequently, I knew we were getting closer. Well, we headed our way up the stairs and saw a dealer's room... well... a small hallway really, with only three booths. One for a DVD and CD for one series, which I forgot the name of, another for books, manga, and NewType magazine. And the last for Pocky. Well, I went in and registered and looked around some more, but it was ten minutes into the convention, and I still hadn't seen Chris Patton or Tiffany Grant, the voice actors at their panel. I finally figured out where it was and interrupted slightly while walking in. Tiffany saw my shirt, the Kyle Hebert Shirt and assumed I went to A-Kon. I explained I did to her and they continued on with the panel. I'll say it right away, it was a SMALL room, only about ten to twelve feet by about eight to ten feet. Only about 15 people could fit in without having to share flesh with one another. But anyway, the voice actors continued on and talked about ADV and their past lives until seven, which was the time for them to go and judge cos-play and karaoke. We wrapped up and they shipped off, which just about everyone followed.

The Second Hour

This was about the shortest hour, because my friend and I walked in and watched a disorganized opening ceremony and about two non-competitive singers, which filled up around thirty minutes. In that time, I got bored and figured it'd be good to meet Chris. I got myself up and introduced myself, to which he remembered right away. We got to talking and he asked if I had anything to sign. Plenty. I had one Spriggan poster, a Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth poster, a Neon Genesis Evangelion box set, and one last Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth DVD. By about the time they got done signing, the messages had read, "Stop giving me stuff." Well, not literally, but Tiffany did seem annoyed. After lots of signing, I talked with Chris about plenty of things: ADV, Ping Pong Club, A-Kon, this con, and our favorite food, Pocky. After much talking for about fifteen minutes, plus my cramped knee because I to kneel down to get to his eyesight in the chair, I walked back to my friend and we decided to go find a drink. After getting a drink and coming back, the cos-play was going to begin soon.

The Third Hour

Around eight PM, the cos-play began, first with a Final Fantasy show with two Squalls against a Yuna. The referee couldn't get the Squalls under control, so he left with Yuna, and the Squalls chased each other around the room. Why this one won first place, I have no clue. I missed the second and third one, because I went to go get some Pocky. But, when I went to go get some, some girls had stopped me to judge a fan art picture contest. I made my choice, quickly, and got me my beloved Pocky. Only two dollars. Two whole dollars, for pure bliss and, to be honest, quite destructive. Too much of a good thing, you know. Anyway, I got my Pocky and saw some of the viewing room, which Dragon Half was showing. I came back after watching about ten minutes, to which some singing was mostly going on. The next cos-play was three young girls, who danced around and said some things I couldn't hear. That won third. Moving on, the cos-play had to be postponed, because the guest of honors/judges needed a potty break. After that was done, one more play was put on, a dancing Asuka, and the judging needed to be done. I went to buy some books, getting a GTO manga, an Endless Waltz one, and Love Hina too.

The Last Hour

After ten minutes of deciding and figuring out what's what, the judges announced the winners of the fan art and the cos-play. That took some time to go about, because so many people were running and screaming and whooping for more. The guests of honor told their last words and around 9:20, it was time to dance. Chris got up from his table and ran up to me, saying that this is one weird con, which I had to agree with. We chatted for a few minutes and then he was told to go out and talk with the fans. And what, I'm not!? Eh, anyway, I got through to the fans and after he spoke with some, and I spoke with Tiffany, we got some time to ourselves. He told me he wouldn't stay to ten, because he needed to find a restaurant fast. I was hungry too, so I figured I would leave, but I wanted to get a picture with him real fast before I did leave. We got our picture and my friend and I headed out, got back to the car and drove home, wishing we could pass by a Sonic or another restaurant that was open.

Home

Not much to say, except, I stayed up as late as I could to watch Adult Swim and also tried to read some of my manga. I talked some with Kyle and other friends, then made my way to bed, knowing that I had to stalk Chris now, because he is an AWESOME guy.
