A-Kon - Day 2 Journal Entry : June 2, 2001
Since I couldn’t sleep, I got up and got
dressed and waited until 7:00 before heading to Josh’s to pick him up. He was
still asleep when I got there so I woke him up and he got ready in a hurry. I
stopped to get another camera for the day and then we headed toward the Westin.
We arrived at 8:00 and started our second shift. This time I was a rover, which
means I waled around the convention making sure nobody was shoplifting and
giving people at the doors breaks when they needed it. My shift ended at 12:00
and I instantly went straight back to the FUNi booth for Cynthia Cranz’s, who
plays Chi-Chi, autograph. Sean Schemmel was signing with her. While in line I
bought a Gohan t-shirt and the new DBZ video of the junior division tournament.
Schemmel is still being goofy, staying in character the whole time and
delighting the fans.
Afterwards, I run into Kyle Hebert again and he shows me
his latest purchase, a cell of Mystic Gohan, which looked awesome if you like
animation cells. He said he got a discount since he did the voice of the
character. He then introduced me to Hunter, who works for FUNimation, and asked
about giving interviews. If FUNimation gives it the ok, I will get an interview
with Kyle Hebert for DBZGTlegacy.com. I will let everyone know any details if
this happens. I tell Kyle I’ll see him at 3:30 for his signing and head out
for some lunch and to take pictures of people in their costumes. I must say
that there were WAY TOO MANY people dressed up in Sailor Moon outfits. Josh and
I take a break in the lobby for an hour or so to regain some energy. At 3:15,
we head upstairs again for Kyle and Eric Johnson’s signing. I get Kyle to
sign my new shirt and the other items I had signed by the other voice actors
and get his sketches of Gohan and Trunks.
I spoke to Daniel some more about his
site and this one before noticing that Gen Fukunaga is doing an interview. I
stuck around and waited until he finished, then got my picture taken with him.
At 6:00, a Q/A session was taking place with Fukunaga, so Josh and I head over
to the Tenison room in the Westin and wait for his arrival. He shows up and
begins by telling how he got started with FUNi and obtaining DBZ. After that,
he opens questions to the floor. Some dumb questions were asked, like why
shirts weren’t made in sizes larger than XXL. However, some intelligent
questions came up, like the future of FUNimation. Fukunaga spoke about future
series to come out. Blue Gender is the first to come out, a 26 episode sci-fi
saga. Next is Yu Yu Hakusho, the main competition DBZ had in Japan, which
encompassed 312 episodes. He also explained why some figures came with guns.
Irwin toys used the same toys that were sold in France and those had guns. Once
they were released on the market here in the US, FUNimation was irate. That’s
why we have the new action figures out on the market that look nothing like the
old ones. Fukunaga answered a lot of questions, and then quizzed the audience
on the two new series, with correct answers receiving a poster. Josh got a Blue
Gender poster, and I got a Yu Yu Hakusho poster. By now it was 7:00 P.M. and I
still was feeling ill so I took Josh home and went to my house and crashed.
