How To Write a Good Fanfic

Many people on the web wish to become aspiring well-known, high-quality fan fiction authors, but very few actually achieve the recognition for their work. Admittedly some works go to waste, being spectacular in every aspect, but only being read by few Internet surfers. This is a rarity though, for if you write something extraordinary then it generally gains the acknowledgement is deserves. This guide will hopefully help you write something that gains your piece the amount of readers that it deserves.

First of all it always helps to plan out your story, so you need to know what it’s going to be about, who the main characters are, what they’re going to be like, etc. The best thing to do is draw a spider diagram and have all the possible storylines in your fiction, just brainstorming until you’ve decided on your favorite idea. You might want to get someone to help you with choosing one, as other people’s input is always useful. Try and make it an original one too, people don’t want to read the same story about 10 different times.

Once you have got your basic plot sorted, you’ll need some characters. Existing characters from the series are generally more popular than a group of made up ones, and certainly easier to write about as they don’t require that you build them up as much. It is always good to have at least one made up character though, as they can be whatever you want them to be like, and have no limits or restrictions for what you can do with them. If you do decide on using custom characters though, make sure you introduce them, and build up their character, etc, as well as possible. Once again, brainstorming would be useful for that too.

Once you’ve got the basis of your fan fiction, you can begin writing it. Make sure that you write it one chapter at a time rather than trying to do it all at once, as people will be more interested and keep their attention for longer like that.

To start with it is always best to describe an important location or character in as much detail as you can, or perhaps start half way through an important action scene such as a chase. These will have the greatest effect on the reader, and help them realize what’s going on. If you’re going to attempt something complicated then make sure it’s all planned out extremely well, otherwise you’ll probably end up messing it up.

So once you’ve prepared all this, you’re ready to start. Use descriptive words on as many occasions as possible, and go into great detail about everything. Make sure you stay in one tense too, avoiding going from past to future, otherwise your story will look rushed and unprofessional.

Finally, proof read the chapter after you’ve finished it, and correct any mistakes, and add anything that will make it better. You might want to change some words to make everything sound more prominent, such as changing ‘pain’ to ‘agony’.

Once you’ve finished everything, then write a few more chapters, and submit away to all the sites that you know will accept it, so you can get other people reading it. You might want to write a preliminary fiction to start off with, then go onto the real story after getting feedback for the first one.

Hopefully I’ve included everything necessary to help you write an excellent story, and with a bit of luck and skill you could become a well-known author.
