Dragonball GT: Final Bout

Dragonball GT: Final Bout is quite simply the best DragonballZ/GT game available for the Playstation console. Although many consider this game a total bust and say it sucks, i'll give you a real and unbias look at it's hidden powers.

The first great thing about Final Bout is it's awesome anime intro which features a series of fighting scenes, character introductions, and showing off there poses!. The intro screens are also decked out with picutres of SSJ Son Gokou in his new blue and yellow costume and have a pretty catchy theme to the menus.

Now onto the game, the first thing you'll notice is the modes of play which are not that plentiful, but satisfying none the less. Read below for a quick recap of the available modes:

Taisen Mode (Story Mode)-
The story basically takes you through the different stages fighting random enemies form the game, depending on who you choose as your fighter. It's pretty cool to see the two opposing fighters talk trash and rant about themselves or their opponent before the match. After defeating all the enemies that come your way you are forced to meet Super Bebi or in the game "Baby". The mode itself is pretty self-exclamatory and can vary ind difficulty depending on how hard you set the game to be. The best tip for survival I'd have to say is watch out for combo's and the satisfaction of beating the game is followed by the ending and credits.

Tenkaichi Budoukai Mode (World's Strongest Fighting Tournament)-
This is basically a no-holds barred tournament it supports upto an impressive 8 players with 2 fighting simultaneously in the true to the show tournament arena. The tournament itself is set up in three brackets and whoever wins advances one bracket up and one step closer to being the world's strongest. The battle grounds in which to fight in can be chosen from two different fields (from the Tenkaichi Budoukai tournament grounds to an outdoor setting). Whoever the winner is will get to hear a certain special rant from the character depending on how well they fought and who they defeated.

Build Up Mode-
This is a two-part mode and is perhaps one of the best modes for you and your friends to play, it allows you to choose a character and build up their skills, power, ki, speed, and power level. This particular Build Up Mode is unique from DBZ Ultimate Battle because of the fact, depending on one's style of play, the character will develop in an infinite amount of ways. For example, if you fire off lots of ki-blasts, then the power of the energy attacks will rise or if you love to block attacks, then the endurance of your character will increase. And for those of you who just like to stand up and slug it out with punches, kicks, and combos then your hits will become that much more deadly! Another plus is that data from Ultimate Battle 22 can be directly imported into Final Bout. The data imported from Ultimate Battle 22 imports their build-up stats into the game. For example, Ultimate Battle 22 characters which had very strong ki attacks will have the same characteristics in Dragonball Final Bout. Also, the fighters from UB22 lose about half of their levels when being imported into Final Bout, and this gives them a chance to advance even further than they could in UB22. Characters used in the build-up mode can be used in the Tenkaichi Budoukai mode.

Build Up Battle Mode-
This puts your Build Up mode characters against your friend's Build Up characters and you two can slug it out to see who developed their character the most well-rounded.

Options Mode-
This is sort of a no-brainer, but it allows you to configure different things, such as the power bars, Meteo Smashes (long combos), Demonstration System, Specials, and more. You may also configure the difficulty, and enter a practice mode.

Now that you're familiar with Final Bouts modes, onto the most controversial aspect and that is the gameplay. Most other sites will say that the game is slowl, choppy, and the collision detection is WAY off, but I have not found half the wild claims people make. The only noticeable things about the game is that sometimes when the heat of battle gets REALLY intense like only DBZ can get the game experiences minor-medium slow down. Also at times if you keep jumping over a character their character may get turned around for a second and even though you are punching in the opposite direction of them it will hit unless they dodge of course. One thing that really makes the action seem less realistic is when fighting in the air it's hard to do combos because one good shot will send them flying back. Good things about the gamepay however is the meteo smashes which really kicks things into high gear, once you start a meteo smasher you keep hitting a series of two buttons at a time until the person guesses your combo correctly. Once the meteo is started you keep unleashing serieses of punches, kicks, overhead smashes, spin kicks, punches, and more!!! Another cool thing is if you are in the air and begin a meteo smasher when the opponent is about to die then you'll knock them down into a tree, rock, or mountain, then say a little taunt and fire your finishing ki-blast! Another thing that disproves critics, is those that say the game is totally 2-D must not have seen some of the 3-D features such as the dodging. It is possible to dodge attacks by making your character fly towards or away from the screen!

Overall the game totally rocks!, the bugs can get a little annoying at times and the gameplay may get tedious for beginners. But, once you learn how to play and learn some moves things can get pretty wild and fun just like the real DBZ the action is fast and intense. There are lots of moves for each character including special attacks such as the almighty Genki Dama! ANY FAN MUST BUY THIS GAME!
