This is one of those anime that you will
prejudge right when you see it. You'll think it's another one
of those Pokemon rip-offs, but once you start watching, you'll
agree when I say that it is very different. At first I didn't
care much about the show, but the story really sets in after
the first few episodes. The difference about this show and
Pokemon is that the monsters can and do die in this series.
They transform into discs, which then can be revived into new
monsters in shrines. Even though intended for kids, I would
still recommend this anime. Not the best, but also not the
worst.
The animations is not what I would call great. The characters
are drawn very well, but the battle scenes and actual
animations is not that good. They would sometimes use the same
clip over and over into different scenes. But this is mainly
in the fight scenes. The environment such as the towns,
forests, mountains are drawn nicely.
Sound effects are top notch in Monster Rancher. The voice
dubbing is excellent, and the cast job is perfect for their
characters. The music is very catchy and not annoying like
some. One little downfall, the sound effects of the battle
scenes could have used a bit more work.
The characters are very uniquely drawn from other animes. You
wouldn't find a Pikachu look-alike. The characters are very
nicely modeled. But since this was a monster show, it would
have been good if they would have had a lot more different
types of monsters. They have enough but not as much as Pokemon
or Digimon.
