Review: The
reigning King of survival horror returns with an explosive 'sequel', and what a
sequel it is.
Players take on the role of Jill Valentine, a special agent who has to
single-handedly take on a city of zombies, monsters, and whatnots. And all this
dressed in a miniskirt. In terms of story and plot, don't expect much from
Resident Evil : Nemesis. It's like all the other Resident Evil games.
Protagonist trapped in a town with monsters. Original. But plot aside, Nemesis
offers an exciting journey of horror.
The title character is possibly one of the scariest opponents ever created. He's
seven feet tall, sports a rocket launcher, runs faster than your character, and
chases her throughout the city relentlessly. This is obviously a change (and a
good one) from the previous RE games where you can easily escape any monster by
leaving the room. Nemesis is extremely hard to kill, almost unstoppable, and the
fact that he follows you from room to room totes up the scare factor
tremendously.
Gameplay has improved from other RE games, with the ability to dodge and do a
180 degree turn, making it easier to survive the horrors of Raccoon City.
Graphics are fantastic, and beautifully rendered, although they are sometimes
static, they are still a nice addition. Sound is... well... on the whole, the
music does well to add to the gloomy and creepy atmosphere, but the voice acting
leaves much to be desired. I guess it's a tradition for RE games to have
horribly acted characters, and it would be a pity to break from tradition. It
seems like they hired the cast of Baywatch to do the voiceover. Half the time
overdramatic, the other half under dramatized, you have a hard time relating to
Jill.
With amazingly stupid sentences like "I'm still alive" and "An ominous wind is
heard.", you'll be laughing out loud sometimes, and this detracts from the whole
point of the game - to be scared.
But these are minor flaws, and Resident Evil: Nemesis still remains to be an
enjoyable game. I found myself on the edge of my sit most of the game, fearing
the next moment Nemesis will burst through the glass window, or jump down from
above. A truly engrossing game that does what it does best - scaring its
players.
