DBZ: BuuYuu Retsuden
Please allow this page time to load fully.

The only known confirmed DBZ fighting game for the Sega Genesis is, Dragonball Z: BuuYuu Retsuden, and I have no idea what the sub-title means so don't ask :). This is definitely a game that could have and should be able to compete with...well...decide for yourself.

The graphics on this game are pretty good, they can definitely compete with the likes of Street Fighter Turbo or Hyper Dimension, an SNES DBZ Fighing game. However the people are rather small, but there is no problem at all, the graphics aren't awesome, but acceptable. The Ki-Blast effects and explosions look pretty sub-standard, less like lighting effects, and more like solid beams of...stuff. lol. The movements and the physical attacks are animated pretty well and they really show pain or anger on their faces. Nice. The stages are pretty well done, most of them are from the show, however the have soem extra ones. My personal favorites are the roadway backdrop where Vegeta fought Android 18 and the exploding Namek with flowing lava in the background.

The game is pretty deep, but not very much, it's your typical fighting game with a Vs. Mode, Arcade Mode with fake storyline, etc., However it is pretty cool how they added the pre-fight commentary from each fighter and also the pre-fight storytelling in the Arcade mode, WISH I KNEW JAPANESE! UGH.

As I said earlier, the special moves don't look so spectacular, but like alot of the other DBZ fighting games I've played they have a large variety. There's the quick fireball, fast invisible fireball, solar flare which is actually a white flash of light, each fighter's specific 2 special energy waves, and a ground blast. To add more strategy then just jumping around and firing endless blasts at each other, they added a ki bar under the energy bar. The strategic part is that unlike the others where when you're ki runs out you have to just wait for it to refill, when you have no ki your fighter gives tiring huffs and puffs. They've also added multiple ways to save yourself from getting blasted to the next dimension much like Final Bout. You can hit a series of buttons that will alow you to fold your arms and weather the blast, but halve the damage. Or you can teleport out of the way just in time. Very cool. They've also made this even deeper by adding specific requirements for each move, for some moves you have to be almost dead to use them, like Change Now, which is true to the show. Some require you to be over half the screen away from your opponent, and this is indicated with the innovative active split screen. When you and your opponent are more then half a screen away from each other a black line appears to show that you're far apart. As you get closer, the line turns red to tell you that you're about to be on the same screen. This also takes effect when you jump into the air and your opponent is on the ground. Even better. The combos in the game are also very crucial, a series of kicks, punches, elbows, etc., can be executed with a quick motion on the D-Pad followed by a button, Street Fighter style. However if you're playing with a keyboard on Emulator it's much harder to do this. Top that off with powermoves that let you really feel the intensity of a fight, there's offensive ones that may send you at your opponent with a flying elbow that knocks him/her off the screen. And there are defensive ones, like a SSJ can use super speed to quickly fly behind their opponent. Sweetness.

The gameplay is pretty good, but like with all Emulators/Roms, I recommend you get a Game Pad for your PC so its just like playing on the PC. Otherwise you'll have to assign buttons to certain keys on the keyboard and play that way.The background music and the sound effects are good, especially since they have each fighter's voice on the game for when powering up or charging for a ki blast...

Overall this is a great game even though like most other fighting games for Sega, it should have more modes to play in, but it's average. I give this an average rating of 6.5 out of 10. Though you have to remember that 8 is about the best I'll give a SNES or Genesis game unless it really REALLY rules.
