-Subject: IGN ENTERTAINMENT TO ACQUIRE ROTTEN TOMATOES, ONE OF THE INTERNET'S LEADING INDEPENDENT MOVIE SITES
   Wednesday, June 30, 2004 @ 7:08 -=- By {-SzR-} drop me a line
-Combined Properties Will Capitalize on Close Synergy between Games, Movies and DVDs for Advertisers Seeking to Reach Coveted 18-to-34 Year-Old Market
BRISBANE, Calif. - June 29, 2004 -- IGN Entertainment, a leading Internet media company serving the games and entertainment enthusiast markets, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Rotten Tomatoes, a premier destination site for movie and DVD buyers from the most casual enthusiasts to the most die-hard film buffs. The acquisition will add a key movie and DVD-oriented property to IGN's existing entertainment portfolio and will further strengthen the company's ability to deliver the coveted 18-to-34 year-old demographic to its advertisers.

Rotten Tomatoes will be IGN Entertainment's third acquisition in the past 12 months, following on the footsteps of the company's acquisitions of GameSpy Industries and TeamXbox. The transaction represents a step towards broadening IGN's coverage of the movie and DVD markets, which are similar in demographics and buying power to the video and PC games markets reached by IGN's other flagship sites.

"Rotten Tomatoes will add tremendous depth and complementary value to IGN's existing portfolio of movie and DVD coverage on IGN's FilmForce. Hardcore movie buffs and casual fans alike will be able to get the information they want on virtually any movie or DVD," said Mark Jung, CEO of IGN Entertainment. "By adding the Rotten Tomatoes audience to the movie and DVD buyers we already reach, we'll be able to offer even more value to our entertainment, games and general consumer advertisers."

Rotten Tomatoes' addition to IGN Entertainment's portfolio will also increase the size of the key demographic audience the company already offers advertisers. According to comScore Media Metrix, Rotten Tomatoes reached a worldwide audience of 5.2 million in May, 2004, and, when combined with other IGN properties, reached in that same month an unduplicated audience of 22.9 million. *

Rotten Tomatoes' CEO Patrick Lee is delighted to be joining forces with IGN Entertainment.

"We are thrilled to be teaming up with an organization that really does online entertainment content right and shares so many of our company values," Lee said. "Rotten Tomatoes is all about providing the best entertainment content to its users. IGN shares the same mission."

IGN's acquisition of Rotten Tomatoes will offer new opportunities for the game publishers, consumer product companies and Hollywood studios that already advertise on the media company's online properties.

"The fact that Rotten Tomatoes' audience is more mass market than the audience of IGN's game properties broadens our offering to all of our advertising customers," explains Jung. "For our entertainment advertisers, we will be expanding our audience of movie and film enthusiasts. For our game industry customers, we will be providing reach to mass-market gamers. Our consumer product advertisers will get more reach to a key age group whose use of other media is declining. We also will be growing our female audience-nearly half the traffic to Rotten Tomatoes is young women.

"Actually, the acquisition is a good demonstration of how IGN is applying our expertise in amassing vertical content, which we honed in the gaming field, to another key digital entertainment market segment-movies and DVDs," Jung added.

The transaction is expected to close within the next few weeks.

In a related move, the company has decided to stop using the IGN/GameSpy moniker and is reverting back to its legal corporate name, IGN Entertainment, which better reflects the breadth of the company's entertainment media holdings.

About Rotten Tomatoes
Started by a movie enthusiast, Rotten Tomatoes has become one of the leading destinations for both casual movie-goers and film buffs. Rotten Tomatoes' editors collect and index the reactions of the nation's top print and online film critics as well as offering a variety of related integrated services, including streaming movie trailers, movie show times, an image database of official movie posters and celebrity photos, and a price comparison service for DVDs. The site has information on more than 100,000 movie titles and offers 500,000 review links in its ever-growing database. Reviews are neatly summed up on Rotten Tomatoes' trademarked "Tomatometer" index as "Rotten" or "Fresh."

-Subject: DBZ Live action is back
   Saturday, June 26, 2004 @ 8:29 -=- By {-SzR-} drop me a line
-Okay so I signed up for this email thingy at IGN and on my list is DBZ. Well thank god I do things like that from time to time as Brian just emailed me this bit of INTERESTING info and yes it's an ADD-ON to SAM Da Mans Post::

Dragonball Z's Alive
Live-action DBZ movie back on track.

June 25, 2004 - Just when fans were beginning to think that all hope was lost for the live-action Dragonball Z, today's Variety scoops that 20th Century Fox has hired screenwriter Ben Ramsey (The Big Hit) to adapt the property for the big screen.

In addition to The Big Hit, Ramsey has scripted the forthcoming adaptation of Marvel's Luke Cage and Columbia Pictures' Static. The trade tips that he'll be paid $500,000 for the gig.

20th Century Fox initially fast-tracked the project when the rights were acquired in Spring 2002, but development stalled out and DBZ was feared to be DOA. In fact, an unnamed Fox rep was recently quoted as saying, "We won't be making that movie." Sounds like that was premature.

The hit Japanese anime series was adapted from the Dragonball manga by Akira Toriyama. Back in '02, he told the Hollywood Reporter, "I have always drawn my manga with the desire to create something unique to comics, something that can only be expressed in the form of comics. I felt that if I didn't do so, the reason for the existence of my comics will become weak. But recent movies have surprised us by entering such territory that used to belong only to comics with wonderful technology and wisdom."

As the trade describes it, DBZ follows "the adventures of an adult humanoid alien who's just discovered that he was sent to Earth to blend in and destroy our population but instead elects to protect it from an oncoming alien onslaught."

Fox production exec Peter Kang is shepherding the flick.

No other talent is attached to the film at this time. Screenwriter Tedi Sarafian (Terminator 3) was previously attached to the project and director Roland Emmerich was reportedly interested at one point.

Very very cool.

-Heres an update on the Live Action DBZ movie. According to an entertainment online news magazine called Variety.com the Dragonball Z: Live Action Movie project is alive and well. Futhermore, Hollywood screenwriter Ben Ramsey has a half-million-dollar deal with 20th Century Fox to do the Dragonball Z adaptation. This project is being overseen by Peter Kang, Fox's VP of production. In addition, Kang's office confirmed that the movies is a Fox project. However there still is no release date set for it.

   Wednesday, June 23, 2004 @ 5:35 -=- By {-Sam-} drop me a line
-- According to thies Anime Tourist Article from Akron Con, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex will make it onto Cartoon Network this year, but the DVD will be released before the air date. (have heard that many times.)

- Bandai did not buy the rights to a live action version of Witch Hunter Robin, but they do have an option to make something. Unfortunately nothing has been made, but a development is in the works.

- In terms games this year; there will a Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Seed and Zeta, Inuyasha and other non-anime games titles.

- Live Action Evangelion Update: Still no director yet. Gainax has just approved the short list of directors. Now its just a matter of negotiating out things. If they were to cast right now, the actors would need to be at most 11-12 years-old. Therefore we can conclude that there will be more than one movie since they are concerned with the actors outgrowing their parts (like Harry Potter)

- According to Funimation speaker "Lance Haskell" The big news for Funimation was the licensing of Gunslinger Girl (Tv). Lance also revealed that they will be releasing the uncut versions of Shaman King for 4 Kids Entertainment (the license holder). This will come both dubbed and subbed.

Informer: Anime Tourist

P.S. Also if you haven't yet check out the Linkin Park - Breaking the Habit video which was put together creativly useing Japanese Anime-style.

Also, According to the Lycos search engine the key word “Dragonball” is the most popular searched item in the history of the Lycos Top 50. -- Sam.

-Miyazaki Wave 2 DVD releases delayed

The Digital Bits, a DVD Retail Company, is reporting a delay in the long-awaited Region 1 DVD releases of Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Porco Rosso and the new widescreen two-disc Special Edition of My Neighbor Totoro. They were announced for release on August 31, 2004; but have now been delayed for an unknown reason. A new date has yet to be announced.

Takahata titles still tentative

Meanwhile, three other well-known Studio Ghibli films, under director Isao Takahata, are still in the planning stages for similar two-disc Region 1 releases:

1. Pom Poko (a film about raccoon dogs protecting their forest from urban sprawl).

2. My Neighbors the Yamadas (a quirky film about a "typical" Japanese family)

3. Only Yesterday (a movie about a working girl who reflects on her youth).

These will also be released under Disney, and have been announced set for a November release.

-Subject: 'Rahxephon: The Motion Picture' Anime Coming Soon
   Sunday, June 20, 2004 @ 3:30 -=- By {-Otaku Goku-} drop me a line
-A unique re-telling of the popular mecha anime series, RahXephon: The Motion Picture is the fascinating story of a society torn apart by undisclosed morals, and of a boy trying to find humanity despite nearly losing it every battle. Created by Yutaka Izubuchi, RahXephon offers more than the average giant robot genre title, with its psychological story and complex characters; making the series and consequently the movie, a wonderful portion of what fans hope Japanese animation will become.

The mecha designing genius Yutaka Izubuchi wrote and directed the spectacle that is RahXephon and in the early stages of production once noted that he and his staff were "looking at creating a new 'standard' of robot anime," and with the benefit of hindsight, the popularity and impact of the RahXephon series, it is the hope of many fans on both sides of the Pacific that more animated series' and films in the future will be made with as much effort and desire as was Izubuchi's RahXephon. The story revolve around a youth named Ayato Kamina, and how his world is turned upside down and how all that he once thought was real turned out to be a mere fantasy. His journey to find peace within himself and to save the world from invading forces is a journey that is impossible to take lightly. The winged god of a machine, RahXephon, must be piloted by Ayato, a job that has him counterattacking threats to Tokyo, and a job that will push him to the limits of his human psyche. With an invading race of aliens seeking to overtake humanity, the themes of human beings learning to co-exist with one another's differences are only heightened.

RahXephon: the motion picture is a full-length movie that tells a complex story by the way of personalizing each characters motives and identifying the battling simplicities and complexities of said motives; this feature film retells the story of the series along with a few additional scene an animation as well. The movie will have approximately twenty minutes of new footage added to the already intense storyline, and seeks to involve the audience in a battle to save mankind. Covering the many genres, of action, drama, science fiction and even romance, RahXephon: the motion picture is a thought-provoking story sure to invite much commentary from fans. Revealing more about the mecha that Ayato pilots and the importance it holds, this feature film is an interesting buy for those already familiar with the series and new to the series as well.

ADV Films will distribute the RahXephon feature film in two versions. One of which is the single disc release as will contain the two-hour long movie, which will retail for $29.98. The second version of the film is the limited edition, which will include the feature film as well as a fifty-four paged information booklet and an Artbox (which will hold all seven seasonal DVDs including the feature film), which will retail for $44.98. RahXephon as created by Yutaka Izubuchi is a interesting inspiration to future series and films sure to involve the wonderful world of mecha anime, and is a unique and innovative story that has gained the attention of even the most indecisive of viewers.

That’s about About 4-years-ago, and since then DBZ hasn't been out of the Top 10 since the first week of the Lycos 50. And its still going strong; currently its at #9 on the Top 50.    Friday, June 18, 2004 @ 6:11 -=- By {-SzR-} drop me a line
-Tokyopop is reporting that display space is continuing to grow for manga and for its Cine-Manga lines. Much of the growth is occurring in chain stores, where increasing sales are begetting still more space.

Behind a 250% increase in year-over-year weekly manga sales, Hastings is doubling its manga display space and moving the section to a more prominent location. Musicland has added a new manga fixture, increasing space by around 75%.

In test mode, Best Buy will try out anime-related manga titles this July and Tower is testing Tokyopop's permanent 40-pocket display now.

Tokyopop is also finding more space for its Cine-Manga line. Barnes & Noble is running a "buy two, get one free" promotion from an endcap, and Books-a-Million is running a similar promotion from a top shelf position. And Scholastic Books placed an order for 250,000 copies of the fourth SpongeBob volume to sell in its school book fairs. Tokyopop is rapidly increasing its production of Cine-Manga

-Subject: Tokyopop-Diamond Deal Put Diamond on Par with CDS
   Tuesday, June 15, 2004 @ 4:14 -=- By {-SzR-} drop me a line
-The change in Tokyopop's shipping made in conjunction with Diamond's new direct market exclusive (see "Diamond Has Tokyopop Exclusive for Directs") took effect in May, according to Tokyopop COO John Parker. Diamond Comic Distributors is now shipped at the same time as Client Distribution Services, Tokyopop's bookstore distributor. As Diamond is shipping its comic store accounts, CDS is shipping book chain distribution centers (except for some Walden's stores, which are dropshipped). Depending on the turnaround times at CDS, book chain DCs, and at Diamond, comic stores should come out ahead of most bookstores at least some of the time.

Tokyopop isn't the only manga publisher with which there have been timing issues between the comic store and bookstore channels. Diamond VP Marketing Communications said that Diamond was "...in discussions with both Viz and Random House to improve their delivery times to the comic store market too."

Tokyopop is also working to improve Diamond's inventory of Tokyopop books by flooring inventory at the distributor. In this arrangement, Tokyopop is placing some of its inventory at Diamond in order to have product closer to the market for reorders and backlist orders.

Several of the distributors cut off by Tokyopop when it went exclusive with Diamond, including AAA Anime, are now buying Tokyopop books from Diamond, and continuing to distribute them. Cold Cut Distribution and FM Distribution are not among those buying Tokyopop books from Diamond.

   Monday, June 14, 2004 @ 7:41 -=- By {-SzR-} drop me a line
-Last month, IDT Entertainment announced that they had acquired Manga
Entertainment. They posted a press release about it here:
http://www.idt.net/corporate/press/releases/1034.asp.

IDT already own the video company Anchor Bay, so Manga UK has become part of
Anchor Bay UK. Unfortunately, this means all of Manga's current release plans
have been put on hold while the transfer of the company takes place.
Accordingly, none of the previously announced releases for the next few months
are expected to go ahead.

-Subject: Manga Continues Market Dominance
   Friday, June 11, 2004 @ 8:02 -=- By {-SzR-} drop me a line
-Manga continues to dominate bookstore sales in the graphic novel category. According to the most recent survey of actual sell-through for the week ending June 6, Fantagraphics The Complete Peanuts volume 1, which came in at number 4, was the only non-manga volume in the top 25, and there were only five non-manga releases in the top 50. Rurouni Kenshin volume 5 from Viz took the top spot, followed by Tokyopop's Fruits Basket Volume 3, and Viz's Alice 19th volume 4. Del Rey's mighty duo of Tsubasa and Negima dipped slightly, but still remain in the top 10. Tokyopop's D.N.Angel is performing especially well with two volumes (1 & 2) in the top 10, while Naruto, Bleach and Shaman King are doing well for Viz. -- SzR.
