Opinions of Trunks In English
Reply-to: mickrat99
Hello,
I don't know if you are still accepting these or not but I still wanted to give my opinion
on the matter. Number one: I"m an idiot, I was soo excited to the tapes, I guess I
was blinded by it cause I accidentally got the edited ones. Well lets just say they were
pretty good from what I could tell. Keep in mind I've never seen an episode of japanese
DBZ but I've watched every video clip I could get my hands on so I could tell a few
things. Vegeta's shower seen is cut (duh!) you can't see anything. Next up is the
kicker.... when Trunks chops Freeza in half it doesn't show him fly apart, it just shows
the two halves slide up and down against one another. Then when Trunks cuts him up into
little pieces, it doesn't show the pieces!! After slicing he immediately blows him up. I
was really dispointed in that. I mean they will show Freeza cut in half while he's alive
but not while he dead, pitty I guess. Althougth, when Freeza was floating in space, it
still look pretty bloody and his face looked nasty. I know this scene was cut some but it
still looked gross by my standards.(I'm not really a blood liking person) Anything other
that I couldn't tell cause I didn't have a whole lot to compare to. Number two: I liked
the voice of Trunks, he did sound like a teenager. I also loved his personality,
especailly when he met Freeza. He had a cocky attitude that reminded me of his daddy. He
had that "I'm going to kill you, no questions ask" kind of thing going for him
and I liked it. I would definately recommend it just get the uncut tapes, Don't get the
edited ones.

Thanks to my employee discount at the Sam Goody, I was able to purchase the
uncut dubs of the Trunks tapes almost dirt cheap (Hey, that's why I buy
'em!). Here's what I thought:
1) King Cold - He reminded me of Tim Curry in a way. Granted, I'm a fan of
Tim Curry's work, I kinda liked King Cold's voice. I know that I'll get a
lot of angry e-mails about this, but I don't care!
2) Bulma has not known Goku since he was 5. Had that been true, Bulma would
have been 9 when they first met. Funi screwed up here.
3) I absolutely loved the scene where Bulma tells off Vejita when he demands
a towel. Absolutely hilarious! This is proof positive that Bulma doesn't
take shit from anybody.
4) Trunks - I liked the way that Funi handled him. His voice works, and he
also sounds like a typical teenager. Granted they screwed up a few lines,
but hey, they've finally done some decent casting.
5) Trunks' conception - YAY!!! Funi didn't have Trunks say that Vejita and
Bulma were married when he was conceived. This actually startles me because
some people would be really offended that premarital sex is even implied in
a "kids' show." It looks like Funi is starting to learn a few things. (Keep
in mind that this is the uncut edition. I'm not sure if it's different in
the edit. If it is, please let me know.)
6) Music, VAs, etc. - The usual stuff. Sometimes it works, sometimes it
doesn't.
7) Dr. Gero - I do not get this. Dr. Gereau? DR. GEREAU?! What the HFIL?!
Why was this name changed??? It completely ruins the pun!!! If anyone knows
why it was changed, please tell me.
Well, that's about it. Overall I'm very pleased with the way Funi handled
this story arc. If things keep going in this direction, I sense some very
good things ahead for the rest of the Cell saga and the Boo saga.
hello, my name is Chris. I got the trunks videos 2 days ago.
EDITS- they took out the cuss words in the uncut! even when Freeza said "go to
hell". I don't know if this is concidered edited. but in the whole episode of
"Another Super Sayan?" every line was changed from the japanese ecect
"What?" and "So this is a super sayan?"
VOICES- Trunks voice was perfect! it had kick ass music when he did the burn attack!
Funimation put alot of efort for this! King Kolds voice was....very disipointing! he
sounds like a english freak. sometimes its good when he screams! it sounded deep...why not
have it like that? but i'll get use to it
MUSIC- awsome
and.......thats it.
From: ssjvegeta017@hotmail.com
All I can say is, damn. These tapes completely rock! The quality of the
Enlish dub has gotten alot better ever since the 3rd season came out.
Dialogue-This is probably the best english dub I've ever heard for the show.
I had to rewinded to see the bickering between Vegeta and Bulma. It was
funny as hell! Vegeta:"Get me a drying cloth, servant woman!"Bulma: "My
name
is Bulma, get it yourself jerk!" That special connection is well kept in the
english dub(I thought that would be lost in the translation)
Voice Acting:Probably the best part of it all. Trunks is by far the best
voice actor on the show! King Kold on the other hand...well I'll just say
homosexuality must run in the family, cuz Kold's voice is slightly on the
Tootie Fruity side. The actors for Vegeta, Piccolo, and the rest of the
Z-senshi is getting better every episode, espcially Vegeta.
Music: Rock and roll baby! The music is juiced and alot better than 3rd
season's music. When Trunks cuts Freiza down the middle, the music is a
sweet techno-beat that moves the scenes. Its almost better than the japanese
version! The quiet, ninja-kinda music in the "black-out" scene with Trunks
cutting up the soilders in very fitting.
In all, these tapes were worth the wait. I just hope they keep up the good
work at Funi. I swear, if they mess up Cell's voice, like make him sound
fruity,I'll hunt them down! Cell is my fave villian(keep your fingers
crossed everyone!)

I was wondering if you've caught the censored tapes yet. Right now, I think I'm the
only one who has them (I was going to get the uncut tapes, but they aren't available here,
and I just couldn't wait any longer to see the episodes). Now, I haven't seen these
episodes in their entirety, but I've seen several clips and read enought to know all that
happened. So here are my opinions of the censored tapes.
Tape 1: Wow. I was surprised at how much they kept in it. The parts I just knew would be
cut were there. When Gohan's tutor was repeatedly whipping him, I don't think they cut any
of it. The really amazing thing was that they left the shot of Freeza floating in space
with little bloody chunks, even the close up with half his head blown off. The only things
I thought were edited were when Trunks takes out all King Cold's soldiers, they just fall
over (I don't know if they got cut up in the uneditted version or not). Also, when Freeza
killed that one soldier, it looks like they did a real quick cut where he tore a hole in
his chest (you just see his expression change, then he's standing there with the hole and
collapses). After seeing this tape, I didn't think the uncut version would be worth the
extra money, because it looked like only minor things were cut.
Tape 2: This was pretty standard. I was really impressed with everything they kept in the
first three episodes, but now they made up for it by taking some noticable cuts. When it
starts, you see Freeza screaming as Trunks is coming down, then he slashes, and that is
the very last time you see Freeza. Next, King Cold screams, Gohan points up, and then
Trunks starts hacking away. Immediately after that, he fires a massive ki blast. Then he
looks at King Cold. So they cut the part where Freeza is in two pieces, they cut the part
where he's cut into kibble, and they even cut his charred remains falling down. I don't
know why they did it. The part with Freeza all bloodied up and missing half his head was
probably the most grisly thing I've seen in DBZ so far, and they left it in. Then when
Trunks fights King Cold, he shoots the blast through Cold's stomach, and you do get to see
it go out his back, but the next thing you know, King Cold is slammed against a mountain
(they cut him sliding down it). It's notable that they left the hole in King Cold's side,
they usually fill those in with a dark red. I think that's all the major differences in
the second tape. They did leave the part where the android crushes Gero's head, and you
can see Roshi's porno collection as he's looking for his glasses, and at the end when he's
holding them up and you can see the pages.
So in the end, the first tape really surprised me, and the second was exactly what I
expected to see in a censored version. Like I said, I haven't seen the complete Japanese
episodes, but it's easy to see where they made cuts if you know what you're looking for
(though sometimes you don't have to look very hard). I don't understand why they cut
Freeza's death scene so much, especially after all they showed in the first tape. Maybe
they snuck the first one by the censors when they weren't looking. Anyway, I'm sure there
are some changes I missed, and I won't know til I see the uncut tapes.

Hey, this is my opinion of the new Trunks American dub, for the first tape. If you want my
name I'm just going to use my screen name, Draw124.
OK, I think it's very good, actually pretty great. I bought the Uncut tape, and I was very
happy at the results of the music and voices, even some of the jokes.
Gohan's voice is the same, he hasn't improved much on line delivery, either. Chi Chi
sounds a little bit different, but not a lot. And the tutor, Mr. Shoe, wasn't as bad as
other people have said. He wasn't great or anything like that, but just not horrible. I'd
like to see how FUNimation censors the whipping scenes for Cartoon Network. That should be
a little fun. ^_-
Vegeta, Yamcha, Bulma, Oolong, Puar, and Piccolo pretty much sound the same. They put a
little more emphasis into what they say, though, which I liked. Chaoutzu sounds a little
more childish, but he always did (in the dub, at least). And Tien sounds deeper, a good
amount deeper, too. It's not bad, it's pretty good, actually.
Frieza is done by the same person, I think, but that little mechanical voice effect was
added. I still don't like Frieza's voice, though. And King Cold. OK, why is everyone so
mad about it? He may sound British, but I mean, he delivers the lines well. So, that
turned out well, too.
And then, Trunks. I think he sounds great. I don't know why everyone is complaining!
"His voice sucks." Yeah, right. That's a good way to put it, huh? Anyway, his
line delivery is much better than anyone else's on the dub, I think. And, he actually
sounds his age, unlike some of the others. I also don't get why people say is voice is so
high or something. It isn't! I think it suits him very well. We were all worried about how
the voice would come out, and I like what I've heard from him so far. I don't have the
Japanese tapes of Trunks, but I have downloaded a couple (Japanese) episodes of him
Online. Compared to the Japanese voice, he sounds great. I like the Japanese voice, too,
but I think I like his English voice better, for some reason. He also has more attitude
than the Japanese. I especially like one of his lines. "He's [King Cold] right...You
don't have all day, more like five minutes." It goes something like that. But I just
really like the way he says it and the attitude and everything.
And also about the music. It's pretty good. I like it for the most part. I hope FUNimation
keeps the music as good as it was in the first tape.
Overall, it's pretty great, just like I said before. Just one more note, I really want to
see how FUNimation handles the scene where Trunks slices Frieza in half. I bet that they
edit it so much it seems like nothing happened. But, I'm actually not sure what they will
do, though, because, first he's sliced in half, then chopped up, and I don't think they'd
redo a whole scene just to make it suitable for 7-year-old kids. If they do and edit it
that much, I will never watch edited American crap DBZ ever again. Sorry, but I just don't
see why they have to edit it so much. If they want to show it in America, then just don't
edit it give it a TVPG rating instead of a stupid TVY7! DBZ never was never intended for
7-year-olds, and it never will be.
From: lurkerdrome
I received my copies of Trunks: Mysterious Youth and Trunks: Prelude to
Terror today. Since I'm pretty excited about it, and since I know it's
something all DBZ fans are anxious about, I thought I'd do a little review
of these two videos.
Now, keep in mind, I have not seen the censored versions yet, and will not
until September, so I won't be making comments on anything of that nature.
I'll be sticking strictly to voice acting, dialogue, and so forth.
Let's take it by the numbers...
1. King Cold
Okay, this was a little freaky. King Cold sounds for all the world like a
deeper-voiced version of "Him" from the Powerpuff Girls. I dunno what the
deal is with that, but given that he died rather quickly, it doesn't matter
much.
2. Trunks
This is the one, of course, we all really care about. The one we've all been
anxious about, nervous about, and downright scared about.
We needn't have worried.
As mentioned by others previously, Trunks definitely sounds like a
teenager...in more ways than just voice. Unlike the somber, battle-hardened,
soft-spoken (usually) warrior teen from the future we've all come to know
and love, FUNimation's Trunks has a little more...attitude. Sounding cocky
at times, but not at *inappropriate* times (when ducking answering the
questions of the others, he's very quiet and shy-sounding), Trunks sounds
very much like a teenager, even using expressions like "Hey, thanks, man."
This is pretty much the extent of any 'damage' they may have done. A lot of
people, I have noticed by checking the opinions section at the ToT, are
bitching about the voice like crazy...they're idiots. Trunks' voice is
pretty good, and I think I actually LIKE the attitude they've given him.
It's kinda like the changes to Goku's character...although you *know*
they've changed him, you can't help but like what they've done.
A sample line of Trunks' dialogue:
Original: "Son Goku isn't the only Super Saiyajin. There's also one right
here."
Dub: "You're about to find out what it's like to fight a REAL Super
Saiyan...and I'm not talking about Goku."
My favorite line so far from dub Trunks is when he lifts Freeza's
planet-buster attack with one hand:
"Excuse me...is this yours?"
Oh, and has been mentioned by many others...Trunks' dub VA is great at
kiais.
3. Music
This is the first time I've ever really had a comment or concern about the
music in the dub, which has never particularly bothered me. I just wanted to
point out two things here. One is a positive comment, the other is not.
The good: When Trunks decimates Freeza's foot soldiers, the silence and soft
'wind music' as the screen blacks out except for the sword slashes (the
"anime strike effect") is remarkably preserved (assuming it was in the
original--I don't have fansubs of this particular episode)...the 'samurai
drama' feel of that scene was preserved nicely.
The bad: When Trunks goes SSJ and beats the living shit out of Freeza, King
Cold, the spaceship, etc., the music gets Loud. Not only Loud, but Too
Freaking Loud. I'm sorry, but the hard-rock, wrestling-style music is just a
BIT too loud for these scenes.
4. Shunkan Idou
Translated as "Instant Transmission". I don't really see a problem with
this. Better than, say, "Goku Teleport" or something equally lame.
5. Humor writing
They had a lot of fun with Vegeta's pink shirt in these six episodes. The
humor writers seem to be improving. They also had a lot of fun with
Bulma--but unfortunately, in the last episode (Goku's New Technique), they
had a little too much fun with Kuririn. They made him smart off endlessly
the whole time he had Kamesennin's shades.
On a somewhat related note...okay, they probably did this in the original
too, given the facial expressions and body language of the characters during
this scene, but when Trunks started offering everyone drinks...these guys
sound just a *bit* too enthusiastic about *sodas*. I mean, sheesh!
6. Dialogue Shuffle
Having SEEN the episode where Goku and Trunks meet, and the following
episode (the last this time around), I noticed for the first time since the
dub--since these are the first episodes I actually have in my fansub
collection--the dialogue shuffle going on at times. On the whole, the
dialogue pretty closely matches the original, aside from some humor
scripting and such. However, Goku goes on for a little too long when he
first meets Trunks about Instant Transmission, and Trunks berates Goku a
little harshly for not finishing of Dr. Gero....I don't remember him doing
that in the original, but I mean to check my fansub tape later to be sure.
One thing about the dialogue shuffle I did notice, though: They changed up a
lot of the dialogue of the scene where everyone decides to train to face the
Jinzouningen. In the original, Goku and the others mentioned how badly they
wanted to fight the androids in three years. There's no mention of that
here. Instead, when Bulma suggests finding the lab and destroying it before
the androids are ready, Goku says, "But Dr. Gireaux really hasn't done
anything yet" (see below for the explanation of 'Gireaux')." A bit lame.
But, oh well.
Oh, but one line was preserved almost verbatim from the original (or
translation thereof):
Goku: "Oh yeah..Bulma, have a healthy baby!"
7. Dr. Gero's Rename
I'd been a little concerned about this ever since "Dr. Willow" replaced Dr.
Wheelo in movie 2. Sure enough, they did it again. I was half-expecting Dr.
Gero to become "Dr. Gear", but I was wrong. However, what they did rather
surprises me...and it really isn't TOO bad, except for violating the whole
pun thing.
Dr. Gero is now--and this is my transcription of the name, not FUNimation's
(haven't seen one from them yet), but given that I live in a largely Cajun
community, I think this is probably accurate--"Dr. Gireaux". And that's with
a J-sound, not a G-sound. A French name. It's a little awkward for someone
used to hearing "Dr. Gero", but it doesn't bother me too badly.
8. Miscellany
I like the dynamic between Bulma, Vegeta, and Yamcha in these episodes.
FUNimation did a good job in bringing it through.
I dunno how the censored version is going to deal with Gohan's tutor (don't
wanna spend 15 bucks to find out, either)...I have a feeling a lot of cuts
will be made to the whipping scenes.
It'll also be interesting to see how the censored version deals with the
shot of Freeza's battered remains floating through space. That one close-up
of what was left of his face was...pretty gory.
I really need to check my fansub again to be sure about this, but...wasn't
the bit with the Jinzouningen (as indistinct humanoid blobs) killing Dr.
Gero shown sans-dialogue, save for Trunks' voiceover, in the original? In
the dub, they have Gero screaming and pleading for them to stop. Just a
little note. And no, the apparent voice of "Dr. Gireaux" isn't terrible.
That's about all I can think of to comment on in this pair of videos.
Looking forward to the next pair, and seeing how they deal with Juukyuu-gou
and Nijuu-gou. (In fact, the next time, I may buy the censored versions,
just to see how they deal with the brutal rampage the two androids went on
in the city...)
From: KazonLocke
Well, let me start off by saying: ''It's about time!!!" After get my greedy little
hands on the two new tapes down at the local EB, I popped one into the VCR. I was really
worried about if the wonderful people at FUNimation <cough!> were going to do the
almighty Trunks justice. The vocie, in my opinion, was pretty good. One thing got to me
though, after a while I noticed that Trunks sounded kinda like Mark Hamill. I thought that
he was going to say something like, " You're about to find out what it's like to
fight a real Jedi! And I'm not talking about Qui-Gon...."
From: superknux
I wanted to say that The English Trunks Tapes are awsome.
Hell, FUNimation is improveing big time. I really mostly love that ''Trunks
Theme'' played in the background, it's like a Techno-Typeish kinda song.
From: R_R_Smith@email.msn.com
Well, my two preordered tapes just came in the mail today, and I've got a few opinions to
share...
THE VA: Well, I'll just come out and say it: it sucks. The voice just doesn't fit, and the
acting behind it just doesn't cut it. He sounds a bit too young, and it's obviously
different from the voice from the preview. (It's sorta funny; they still left the preview
in, so you get two different VAs for one guy on one tape.) One good remark, though, his
screaming voice is actually pretty cool.
THE SUPPORTING CAST: No big changes. Chi Chi's voice sounds a bit different, and a little
for the better actually. King Cold is utterly horrible, but that does serve some good.
You'll be so angry at King Cold's snobby British accent that you'll completely forget that
Trunks is under par.
THE DIALOGUE/SCRIPT: Average. FUNi's still inserting a few stupid lines, but there are a
few instances that make up for it, including the "Badman Shirt" jokes, and
Vegeta calling Bulma a "servant woman" was a bit amusing. Dr. Gero is still Dr.
Gero, but it's pronounced differently; it sounds sorta like "Dr. Shi-ro."
Instantaneous Movement is now Instant Transfer, and it is no longer instantaneous, only
the speed of light.
THE MUSIC: Different from the rest of the dub, but whether it's better or worse is up for
you to decide. I, for one, actually found it a bit more enjoyable than before.
THE CARD GAME: Packaged with the Trunks tapes come 3 CCG cards. I don't have enough info
to make a valid judgement yet, but it looks OK so far.
OVERALL: Season 4 seems to be getting off to a sluggish start, but I've got a feeling that
it might pick up soon. Who knows, maybe Trunks's VA will find his place soon...
From: bahamut23@yahoo.com
Here's my early opionions on the Trunks tapes so far (well tape 1 anyhow).
I'll be happy to help any other way I can too.
----
Same bad FUNimation music. Even though some of it was appropiate
for the scenes. I've seen the Spanish versions of the first 3 episodes. When
Gohan dreams of Goku being back, they played Cha-La in the background. Due to
agreements they couldn't here, so it was FUNimation music.
The diaolgue was pretty good, not really cheesy, but good. The
scenes when Vegeta returns and Bulma orders him to shower are hiliarious,
especially what Vegeta wear after. ^_^
Whoever did the voice for Freeza before returned..and the voice has a
metallic pitch to it as well to represent his cyborg self. King Cold sounds
either British or French, and he sound skinda like a fag..
Trunks VA did a pretty good job. He has kinda a snide "flavor" to the
voice also, which makes it intresting.
From: Ashley
i just want to tell you that i bought the two trunks tapes on Saturday, and here are some
of my thoughts of them:
*trunks' voice is pretty nasty and taunting when he is talking to frieza, but when he is
around the z fighters, he has a really nice soft voice
*the queer dialog is still in there, but its not as awkward as season 3's
*king cold...ugh..im sure you've already heard about his voice...ewww..
*the charisma between vegeta and bulma is priceless! i don't think they say one thing to
each other that isn't yelling or making fun of. it's so funny!
*they show the trunks flash intro at the beginning of the tape (and also a whole bunch of
cheesy commercials..just watch when the plastic action figures are fighting..its
hilarious! ^_^)
*trunks is still awesome, even in the english tapes
*master roshi is the biggest pevert...he is constantly reading porn mags
From: ragnorok7
I finally saw the trunks videos and they are pretty good. trunks sounds alright and like a
normal sixteen year old but with a
squeeky voice. king cold sounds like a snobby english man who is being corked in the ass
overall it was good but the voices need a lot of work especially king cold, but hes
already dead( sucker )
From: Mankankosappa
Trunks voice is kind of nasal and high, but you get used to it and to make up for it his
screaming voice is excellent. The character voices haven't been this good since season 2,
everyone has finally seemed to have gotten it. Yes some of the goofy dialouge and the
horrific music is still there, but allot of the really funny and witty comments (like the
ones about the BadMan shirt) are still intact, thank god. All in all, this was just much,
much better than what I expected, and I can't wait to buy my other tape. I hope you won't
be dissapointed, but this is my opinion^_^
From: Burndit
hi meri, ok first of all dont worry about trunks's voice it fits its really good I think
they got an actuall teenager to do it. Frezza is the same, and king cold well lol
........................he's british yeah thats right he has a english accent he sounds
like a deep voiced austion powers, yeah baby lets hop on the good foot and do the bad
thing yea.
From: hiryu64
Trunks' voice is done pretty good he actually sounds like a teenager
But on the other hand King Colds voice sounds really gay he sounds like an
english/french snobby rich person. And you know what else sucks Gokus move
instantaneous movement is called instant transmission which totally sucks
but other than that everything else is fine.
From: Foxtr12308
I just thought I'd let you know, In case no one else has e-mailed you about it, that the
VA for Trunks.... well ... it's not the best, but it's not the worst. I was able to get
ahold of the 1st Trunks tape, uncut, and my friends and I were a little disappointed in
his voice. I just thought I'd warn you. :)
From: luckycat95
I nearly broke down and cried when I heard that voice.
FUNimation really screwed up this time. I pity the day Akira Toriyama sees
that version. I imagined a tank the size of Massachussets slowly running
over their HQ in Texas, and all the blood squeezing out under the treads
magically disappearing while the news reporters claim that the HQ was
abandoned at the time, with Akira Toriyama laughing in the cockpit.
King Kold sounds like Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Future Trunks sounds like a 10 year old kid.
I am never watching the dub, although I was tempted to see how bad it was.
Now I changed my mind.
It took listening to 20 minutes of the japanese voice saying, "I guess it
wasn't just the sword," my fave quote, to semi calm me down.
Down with FUNimation.
From: Jinzouningen18go
Ok, just downloaded the Trunks voice clips in English, they sound pretty decent. King Cold
sounds like crap. Now, looking at this, we got a 1/2 to 1/2 thing going on here, Trunks
sounds good, King Cold sounds bad. What does this tell us about the cyborgs? One could
sound good, one could sound bad. They could've aced 18's voice (I already know they did, I
know the voice actor) and ruined 17's voice (I havn't met the actor yet...). OR they could
both sound good....OR they could both sound British! OMG, if they sound
British/French/Italian/Spanish/German/AUSTRAILIAN/whatever I want someone to stab me in
the foot repetedly with a dull, rusty butter knife, k? Thanx!
From: wwwwho44
Your right he does sound like a teenager, the problem
is the teenager he sounds like. If you havent noticed
it the dude sounded almost exactlly like Beavis! Now i
excsed Fuinmation for krillin sounding like Yoda in
season 3 and vegeta sounding like a wuss in season 3
but makeing trunks sound like a total idiot theyve
gone too far.
