An Exhaustive Study of an Anime Nut

The Result of One Too Many Free Friday Nights

Hello reader. My name is Greg Werner, and I am the founder/maintainer of The Ultimate DBZ Information Site. If you've come to this section of my site, you obviously have nothing better to do, so sit back and relax while I relate to you some of my personal likes and dislikes, as well as how I first got into anime. I'm not here to relate my entire life to you, so if you're here to read some sort of autobiography, you're in the wrong place. For that, I am pleased to direct you to this section, entitled, Greg Werner: The Man Behind the Dragon Balls! Included in this section are pictures and a biography of me. Unless you want me to remain a mystery, don't enter that section!

On the other hand, this section is simply here for you guys to get to know me a little better, and to understand what kind of person actually runs this site. I made it simply for your entertainment, and nothing less. I'd first like to state that my life does not in any way shape or form revolve around anime or Dragon Ball Z for that matter. For me, Dragon Ball Z is simply a hobby that I've taken a particular liking to, and enjoy much much more than the typical fan. Yes, I will admit, that most of my room is indeed plastered wall-to-wall with DBZ posters, wall-scrolls, toys, (for display purposes only of course *cough cough*), animation cels, manga, cards, CDs and my personal DBZ artwork. However, as unbelievable as it may seem, I do indeed have a "life" and I do in fact "get out" and do things with friends and family. This site is also a hobby. I work on it, because I enjoy doing it, and as selfish as it may seem, I actually do it for myself too. I do like to educate, thrill and entertain Dragon Ball fans, however, I really enjoy seeing something that I put my heart and soul into turn out really well. And apparently, this site has. Without further ado, here's a little bit of info about me.

I can do a ridiculously huge amount of perfect impressions including Darth Vader, A female Brooklyn secretary, the rich guy from Gilligan's island, Louie Anderson, A Hindu convient store attendant, a hick, Cartmann, a Japanese man trying to sound like an American, a person with a trachea-hole, a deep Satanic voice (hysterical when used during the right situtation), Chef, Freeza, Piccolo, an alto singer, a bass singer, and others which I don't want to mention here. (The fact that I can do such varied voices is partially due to the fact that I can, for some reason, make my voice extremely low and high pitched).

Favorite Part of My Site: Biographies

Part of My Site That I Hate Updating: Biographies

I'd like to tell you about how I first became interested in anime. It all started in the mid 80's. I saw a show called Voltron. I enjoyed the show for its run and didn't have a clue that it was originally from Japan, (I also probablly didn't know what Japan was). I bought tons of Voltron toys. To this day I still have the gaint forming Voltron in my basement. In 1995 Squaresoft released a game called Chrono Trigger for the Super NES. I bought it the day it came out and fell in love with the game. And just as much as I enjoyed the game itself, I also loved the animation. One day I was flipping through a video game magazine at a store and found out that the animation was done by some guy named Akira Toriyama. I also read that he did a show called Dragon Ball Z. I'd heard that name once or twice before but don't think anything of it. At around the same time, I would get up every single morning at six, to watch Sailor Moon. I loved it! Then, alas it was taken off the air. It was early 1996 when my love for anime really began.

I was having a sleep over at my house and I was up very early in the morning. I turned to the Preview Channel, (Now known as the TV Guide Channel), to see what was on. On the WB 11 there was a show on called Dragon Ball. I swore I'd heard that name before and decide to take a look. Little did I know what impact turning to channel 11 at 5 o'clock that morning would create on my life. When I saw the show, I was puzzled. The animation in the show looked very familliar and then it hit me, Chrono Trigger! Akira Toriyama! I realized that this was the show that, that gentleman did. I watched it and I was amused by the antics of a little boy called Gokou, and his friend, Bulma. I only saw the show about two more times, and then it went off the air. Never to be seen again.... or so I thought!

I can still remember that fateful Sunday in October of 1996. I was up unusually early in the morning playing Super Mario 64, (the popular game at the time). I had just switched off the game when I saw something on TV that made me look twice. I dunno, maybe it was fate, but I had managed to switch of the game at the EXACT moment the show I was goggling at had started. The very first thing I saw was a fat farmer with a gun in his hand looking in fear at something. The attention of the viewer was then taken to a very large man with ridiculously long hair. I thought the animation looked incredibly familliar but I couln't put my finger on it. I watched on as a green creature with pink arms fired something at the big guy. It was very odd but strangely intriguing. Then the show switched to a forest with a dark being jumping through the trees. He finally stood still as the screen went up his body. That hair! How could anyone forget that hair! At that point I knew it was him. A man of ,"Unfathomable power", as Kaiou samma put it. A man that was, "Worthy of the name Saiya-jin", as the vile Taurus uttered. A hero who, "Was never beaten with the odds stacked against him", as Bulma said. A warrior who was, " Earth's Number One fighter!", as Vegita painfully admitted. Yes, the man who I saw standing tall was none other than the hero of one of the greatest manga ever written. His name was, Son Gokou!
