In Search of The Lost Wrestler

Just who is this masked man(?) anyway? Is there just one? Is that even a mask? Is there such a thing as Panda Island and if so, is the Pro-Wrestler Pandaman really their ruler? DOES ANY OF IT EVEN MATTER????

Pandman was a character created by Eiichiro Oda, author of One Piece for submission to a Kinnikuman character design contest dubbed the "New Super Human Contest" which allowed artists to submit character designs for wrestlers. Oda created the character Pandaman to be included in the popular comic by Yudetamago 'Boiled Egg', the pen name of the duo that created the story. December 16th 1998 was the original release of this comic, "Kinnikuman 77 no Nazo" (seen at left) and I do not have a copy of it so I am unaware of what role, if any, Pandaman had in it. He was listed as entry #12 and Oda's profile for him is as follows from One Piece Vol.7 Chapter 56's SBS is as follows:

Pandaman Profile

Name: Pandaman
Birthplace: Tibet
Age: Even he does not know
Height: 200cm
Weight: 122kg
Super Human Strength Level: If he eats bamboo 3,300,000. Before eating it 3,300,000. [note from Greg: YOU'RE WEIRD ODA!]
Killer Moves: S.P.D. (Sasanowara Panda Doroppu) "Bamboo Leaf Panda Drop", Giant Panda Deathlock, Panda Brain Kick [video game only], Panda Head Butt [video game only], Panda Cossack [video game only]. Oda's Notes on him read as follows:

As a baby he, he was discarded in a bamboo grove and thus raised by pandas. "I have seen Princess Kaguya", is what he often tells people, but no one believes him and they rough him up in return, this fuels his desire to become a stronger Super Demonic Villain.
End Profile

Who is Princess Kaguya? I'm glad you asked!

Taketori Monogatari

'The Tale of the Bamboo-Cutter' aka Kaguya Hime

Long, long ago, there lived an old man and woman who earned their living by weaving baskets and other decorative items from bamboo the man personally cut and gathered.

One day the man came upon a bamboo trunk glowing from within. When he cut it down, to his surprise he discovered a little girl inside. He took the girl home, and he and his wife raised her as their own. From that forward, the old man found precious coins in all the bamboo that he cut. And so, he and his wife became very wealthy.

After only three months, the girl had grown into a beautiful maiden and the couple named her Kaguya hime, the radiant princess.

As expected, Kaguya hime had many suitors and among them were five noblemen who were particularly persistent. The princess agreed that she would give herself in marraige to the man who brought her what she requested. But her demands were seemingly impossible to ever find on Earth. Items such as a tree with silver roots, golden branches and dragon balls seemed too obscure or too dangerous to attempt retrieving. In the end, all five suitors failed.

When the Emperor eventually learned of Kaguya hime, he requested that her father bring the maiden to his court, however, she simply refused to go. "I am not a human being," said the princess, "I cannot grant his request...I will die if I am forced to do so."

Three years later, Kaguya hime sadly revealed her true self to the old man and his wife, "I am from the moon. I have been expelled because of a 'sin' I committed in my previous life. Now it is time to return."

The Emperor heard of this and sent 2,000 warriors to prevent Kaguya hime from leaving, but they were frozen when moon people appeared on August 15th, the night of a full moon, to take the princess away.

Her eyes over-flowing with tears, Kaguya hime expressed her gratitude to her earthly parents and left a gift for the Emperor. It was a pouch that contained the medicine of immortality. And so she ascended to the stars, accompanied by the people of the Moon.

The Emperor received the medicine but he thought it was useless to live forever without Kaguya hime. He told the crown prince to burn the medicine on the top of the highest mountain in the country. Since then, this mountain has been called this mountain, Fuji.

There are actually several versions of this myth, some are more action-oriented and some are quite political, but this is perhaps the most famous and well-known version of the tale. If you're interested in those, please check the links at the end of this page. Otherwise, I hope you see the connection/gag here between Kaguya and Pandaman now.

The Kinnikuman Connection

Whether by coincidence or if Oda intended it to be as such, there was a Pandaman in the original Kinnikuman. He appeared in the first published volume of Kinnikuman and was a performer in a suit. Kinnikuman thought that he was a real super hero and tried to battle him, but all poor Pandaman wanted to do was run away. Alas, even as he tried to wave his hands in front of him to defend himself, Kinnikuman thought he was performing the "Kinniku Flash" move. The would-be hero defeated Pandaman with his "Kinniku Special" move. The pictures you see here are the original Pandaman action figure (he was figure #114) and the character from the comic who first officially appeared in Kinnikuman Vol.1 page 157.

I personally do not know much about Kinnikuman beyond the little pink action figures that I played with as a kid growing up in the 1980's. What I do know, is that Pandaman is actually a playable character in the Kinnikuman video game for Game Cube, Kinnukuman Generation II: New Generation VS Legends. To obtain Pandaman simply beat the story mode with Kinkotsu Man (Bone Cold to US fans) in order to unlock Pandaman in Versus and Tournament modes. Getting Kinkotsu requires obtaining 300 plastic figures.

Finding Pandaman in One Piece Manga

This guide is simply for locating the hidden Pandaman drawings [with the exception of Volume 7 page 68]. There are plenty more appearances of Pandaman in the comics, but they are not "hidden". They are part of fan art, reproduced images of his hidden locations, character portraits for popularity rankings, or reproduced figures on the spine (as is the case with Volumes 21 and 28). These are simply the hidden locations of Pandaman. Some of these are rather funny and they might surprise you. I suggest you try to look for him on your own as well. Nothing beats the sensation of knowing you are winning Oda's hide-and-seek game.

I have also made mention of when Pandaman is together with Tomato Gang. Tomato Gang is a 38-year-old (if that is indeed what Oda intended when he wrote '38' next to his name) loan collector that is pursuing Pandaman for money that he owes. He wields a kelp roll as if it were a gun.

As for The Rest?

Pandaman is everywhere. Seriously. It is ridiculous to see all the places he has invaded. I cannot possibly find them all myself because I do not have the resources, for instance he has even been on Japanese commercials. In that event, if anyone would like to submit their Pandaman findings, that would be super! You can always contact me at tsujimania@hotmail.com Other than that, I'll simply be adding my Pandaman findings here in no particular order.

Pandaman Invades the World

  • One Piece Grand Battle 2 for Sony Playstation. Defeat Crocodile and then clear Event Battle Mode with Mr. 2.

  • One Piece Treasure Battle! for Nintendo Game Cube. Complete the "Flying Kaloo" bonus game to unlock Pandaman as an assistant in battle. To unlock the bonus game, you need Deck 16 which is composed of: 202, 221, 255 & 251. Pandaman also faces off against Usopp in Deck 13's bonus game.
