22nd Budokai Comprehensive Guide
QUARTER-FINALS
Match:
Yamcha versus Tenshinhan.
Winner:
Tenshinhan.
Backstory:
Yamcha and Tenshinhan took an immediate disliking to each other, and Tenshinhan
asked Chouzu to rig the draw so he could "shut Yamcha up." In addition to the
personal dislike, both warriors are also from rival schools. (Yamcha from the
turtle hermit; Tenshinhan from the crane.)
Winning Move:
Yamcha is so shocked by Tenshinhan's ability to reflect the kamehameha that his
defense completely drops. Tenshinhan quickly capitalizes and breaks Yamcha's
leg, leaving him unable to continue the match.
Fight Details:
The match begins with the two combatants striking their fighting stances and
exchanging taunts. Jackie Chun (his true identity as Master Roshi still a secret
to his pupils) and the Crane Hermit watch on eagerly as their schools clash for
the first time in the tournament. Krillen thinks Yamcha will easily defeat
Tenshinhan, but Goku disagrees, saying Tenshinhan is a very strong fighter.
Yamcha makes the first move towards Tenshinhan, a flying kick that Tenshinhan
blocks. From there, the two warriors begin to fight a fast-paced, evenly matched
contest, with neither seeming to have the upper hand. This continues for quite a
while, impressing the audience. In the next lull, Yamcha mentally admits that
Tenshinhan is very strong, and Tenshinhan thinks that maybe Yamcha is as strong
as he claimed to be. Yamcha tells Tenshinhan he is about to use a new Wolf Fang
technique on him, but Tenshinhan isn't intimidated. The two began to fight again
and even with the new technique, Yamcha still can't gain the upper hand. In
fact, Tenshinhan begins to take the match, knocking Yamcha all around the ring.
Bulma and Puar are very concerned as Yamcha takes a particularly vicious kick to
the chin. Yamcha recovers from this seemingly match-ending blow and tells
Tenshinhan that he will go all out. He then prepares to fire a kamehameha. Chun
thinks the move is still beyond Yamcha, but is shocked to see him successfully
perform it! As the blast nears Tenshinhan, he strikes a specific stance, and a
powerful aura envelopes his body. The blast hits Tenshinhan and is deflected
back at Yamcha by his defensive ki! No one can believe this, least of all
Yamcha, and he's so thrown off his game that Tenshinhan makes short work of him,
breaking his leg and winning the fight with only a couple more attacks.
Interesting facts:
This is Tenshinhan's first real battle in the series. This is also the first
time Yamcha ever throws a kamehameha. Too bad it didn't do him any good.
Match:
Jackie Chun versus Manwolf.
Winner:
Jackie Chun.
Backstory:
Manwolf came to this tournament looking for Jackie Chun specifically. At the
last budokai, Jackie Chun blew up the moon, trapping Manwolf in his wolf form
and preventing him from being able to get girls. Now he's arrived to take
revenge.
Winning Move:
Jackie throws a bone outside of the ring. Manwolf chases it, much like a dog,
and doesn't realize the folly of his actions until he's already been eliminated.
Fight Details:
Manwolf explains why he's so angry at Jackie Chun as the match begins. Jackie
merely taunts Manwolf. Manwolf attacks furiously, but is shrugged off by Chun,
who says that they're not in the same league. Tenshinhan agrees. Manwolf
continues his angry assault, but Chun is not perturbed, effortlessly defeating
his opponent. Frustrated, Manwolf draws a pocket knife and attacks Chun with it.
Annoyed by this, Chun dodges all of Manwolf's attack and throws him again the
wall, then throws the knife after him; it hits beside Manwolf's head. Chun tells
Manwolf that he can turn him back into a human simply by the power of
suggestion, and that he's going to end this. Manwolf doesn't believe this, so,
to prove his point, Jackie begins issuing simple commands, telling him to
"shake" and "beg," much like a dog. Manwolf does these, but gets angry
afterwards and tells Chun to stop treating him like a dog - he's a wolf! Chun
apologizes, then throws a bone outside of the ring and tells Manwolf to fetch,
which he does, eliminating himself. After the match is over, Chun uses the back
of Krillen's bald head as a surrogate moon, and hypnotizes Manwolf. This
instigates a transformation, and Manwolf reverts back to his human form.
Interesting facts:
Man-wolf was even uglier as a human than as a wolf, which amuses everyone. Also,
this is the last battle Master Roshi ever wins in the series.
Match:
Krillen versus Chouzu.
Winner:
Krillen.
Backstory:
Much like Yamcha and Tenshinhan, Krillen and Chouzu took an immediate dislike to
each other as well, so Chouzu set them up to fight each other by rigging the
drawing with his psychic powers. (Oh, and they're both vertically challenged
fighters from opposing schools, so naturally they dislike each other :P.)
Winning Move:
Krillen distracts Chaotzu with simple mathematical equations, causing the
psychic warrior to lose his focus. Taking advantage of his confusion, Krillen
knocks Chouzu out of the ring.
Fight Details:
Chouzu is stoic as the fight begins, not moving a muscle. Krillen asks if he's
going to try anything, and Chouzu suddenly attacks, kicking Krillen around.
Krillen recovered and was now ready for Chouzu. He disappeared suddenly and
Chouzu struggled to find him. Tenshinhan yelled that he was on Chouzu's left,
but Chouzu couldn't figure out which direction that actually was in time to
block Krillen's next attack. They began to exchange blows at the edge of the
ring and Chouzu floated away, to get some distance between himself and Krillen,
since Krillen is unable to fly. Krillen debates the merits of attacking Chouzu
while he's away from the ring in midair, and decides not to. Chouzu announces
his next attack and points his index finger at Krillen, charging ki into it.
It's the dodompa ray. Fortunately for him, Krillen is able to escape the attack
in the nick of time. Chouzu begins to rapidly fire dodompas, blanketing the ring
with destruction. Goku recognizes this technique as one that Mercenary Tao used,
and this shocks Tenshinhan. He asks Goku how he knows of Tao, and Goku tells him
he defeated Tao. Tenshinhan gritted his teeth in disgust and walked away from
Goku. Back in the ring, Krillen frantically dodges Chouzu's blasts, trying to
think of a way to counter against the strange warrior floating outside the ring.
He decides that, if Yamcha could perform the kamehameha earlier, maybe he can
too, and after testing the waters a bit, Krillen began to think he had a
fighting chance. Tenshinhan related the news of Tao's defeat to Crane Hermit,
and he ordered Chouzu to execute Krillen. Chouzu begin to charge another dodompa
as Krillen prepared a kamehameha in response. All of Krillen's friends watched
on, worried. Chaotzu lets dodompa fly; however, as he's doing that, Krillen
shouts "now!" and leaps up, out of the dodompa's range, and fires his kamehameha
with impressive results. It looks as if Krillen has won, but Chouzu barely
returns to the ring. The two have a stare down, then begin to fight again. It
seems that Krillen has the upper-hand when Chouzu suddenly uses his mysterious
psychic abilities to paralyze Krillen. Now he's easy prey, and Chouzu takes
advantage, kicking Krillen around the ring. After a while, Krillen thinks that
maybe if he can break Chouzu's concentration, he can break his hold on him. So
he decides to use math to distract him, since it doesn't seem that Chaotzu is
very well-educated. Krillen asks "what's 3+4?" The trick works, as Chouzu tries
to figure out the equation by counting his fingers, his focus completely leaving
Krillen, who gets in an excellent punch. Embarrassed and angry, Chouzu returns
his attention to the fight and paralyzes Krillen, threatening to kill him.
Chouzu figures the same trick Krillen tried will work in reverse, so he asks
Krillen "what's 16+27?" Krillen immediately responded with "43!" As Chaotzu
stared at him blankly, he quickly asked him what "9-1" was. Chouzu again dropped
his guard and focused on puzzling out the problem. Krillen made the most of his
opportunity and attacked with all his might, sending Chaotzu out of the ring for
the victory.
Interesting facts:
This is Chouzu's only true fight in the entire series. Krillen also throws his
first kamehameha here. After the match, Krillen is gloating about being a
mathematical genius, so Bulma asks him some 20-figure equation, then answers it
in seconds, which leaves him stuttering and everyone else laughing.
Match:
Goku versus Pamput
Winner:
Tenshinhan.
Backstory:
Pamput represents a celebrity, a movie-star, and an idol to every teenage girl
in existence. Goku represents a determined young small-town martial artist.
Winning Move:
Pamput proves to be nowhere near Goku's league, as he is rendered unconscious
after Goku hits him with a few lightning fast blows. (It only appears to be one
blow, but Tenshinhan saw all 3.)
Fight Details:
Pamput makes a flamboyant entrance to the ring, with acrobatics. He's quite
confident that he'll win the match, and taunts Goku, not taking him seriously.
He attacks Goku, but stops before the blow connects, asking Goku if the punch
was too fast for him to follow. Goku told Pamput that he was pretty weak. Pamput
figured Goku had no idea what he was in for, and after demonstrating his skills
some more, attacked Goku. Goku easily blocked and countered, knocking Pamput out
nearly instantly. The announcers says that it was a one-punch KO, but Tenshinhan
knows better, having seen Goku hit him multiple times.
Interesting facts:
Pamput has often been referred to as the Mr. Satan of DB. Before the fight, his
agent witnessed Goku training, and realized he was far superior to Pamput. He
has his men kidnap Goku before the fight, but when Launch chases them down, it
is foiled.
SEMI-FINALS
Match:
Jackie Chun versus Tenshinhan.
Winner:
Tenshinhan.
Backstory:
Jackie Chun is an alias for Master Roshi, the leader of the turtle hermit
school. Tenshinhan is the star pupil of the rival crane hermit school. Chun is
impressed with Tenshinhan's strength, and wonders why he follows such a corrupt
master. He's determined to change Tenshinhan's mind and get him to follow a
morally upright path.
Winning Move:
In a show of goodwill and respect toward his opponent, Jackie Chun steps out of
the ring and eliminates himself.
Fight Details:
Krillen hopes Chun will get revenge for Yamcha's injury as the match begins, but
Goku doesn't think he can, feeling that Tenshinhan is even stronger than Chun.
The two combatants rush each other and engage in a series of attacks, blocks and
evasions, matching each other equally, neither having the advantage. This
continues for a while, and Chun tries the afterimage technique in hopes of
getting the drop on Tenshinhan. It's no good, though; Tenshinhan sees through
the illusions and kicks Chun into the wall. Chun realizes Tenshinhan's strength
and says he'll have to go all out against him, taking off his shirt and warming
up a bit. Tenshinhan is unfazed. They begin to fight again and it seems that
Chun has the advantage, almost knocking Tenshinhan out of the ring! Tenshinhan
returns, however, and evens things up once again, though he's impressed by
Chun's strength. Chun is also impressed by Tenshinhan's, and realizes that
Tenshinhan is stronger than him. Chun asks Tenshinhan why he's studying under
the crane hermit. Tenshinhan doesn't take kindly to Chun's question and tells
him that he will now use his true strength. Chun wonders what this means when
Tenshinhan suddenly uses the solar flare technique, blinding nearly everyone at
the tournament, including Chun. Tenshinhan then delivers a powerful knee to the
back of Chun's neck, and says that Chun is only unconscious, not dead, as he
isn't a killer. The announcer counts to five and Chun begins to stir. Goku and
the gang's eyesight begins to return at this time as well, and Goku notices that
the announcer's sunglasses protected him from the effects of the solar flare.
Everyone is stunned that Chun managed to recover, and Tenshinhan wants to know
who Chun really is. Chun compliments Tenshinhan's abilities, and again asks him
why he works for such an evil man. He advises Tenshinhan to leave his master's
school and join the side of good. This talk again angers Tenshinhan and they
fight some more. Chun continues to question Tenshinhan's moral fiber, when the
Crane Hermit suddenly deduces Chun's identity! He tells Tenshinhan the truth
about Chun, and Tenshinhan sees Chun for who he really is now. Chun reiterates
that he only wants to help Tenshinhan, set him on the right path. Tenshinhan
tells Chun that he wants to show him something. Chun asks if it's pornographic
and Tenshinhan gets embarrassed, then prepares to fire a kamehameha! Everyone is
started by this, but Chun realizes that the kamehameha will hit innocent
bystanders, so he deflects the blast upwards. Tenshinhan tells Chun that he's a
quick learner: he only has to see a move performed once to master it. Chun
commends Tenshinhan again on his ability, and realizes that Tenshinhan is beyond
him. He tells Tenshinhan that it's been fun, and then jumps out of the ring,
eliminating himself.
Interesting facts:
This is the one and only time Tenshinhan ever does a kamehameha in the series.
In addition, it is the only walk-off forfeit until Piccolo’s forfeit to Kaioshin
in the 25th budokai. In addition, the first-ever usage of the Solar
Flare!
Match:
Goku versus Krillen.
Winner:
Goku.
Backstory:
Goku and Krillen have been rivals since they first met years ago, vying for
Roshi's attention. Being around the same age and being Roshi's strongest two
pupils, their rivalry is a natural one born of an inherent desire to the best.
Outside of wanting to one-up each other, the two are actually quite good
friends.
Winning Move:
Goku, angry at what he considers Krillen's "cheap tactics," knocks Krillen out
of the ring by moving with incredible speed, hitting his opponent 8 times for
the victory. (Once again, only Tenshinhan saw all the hits.)
Fight Details:
Goku and Krillen entered the ring, exchanging casually competitive remarks.
Krillen asked Goku not to hold back and Goku promised that he wouldn't. As they
started each other down, Tenshinhan met up with Master Roshi and they exchanged
words. Tenshinhan asked why he used the disguise, and Roshi explained that it
was for the benefit of his students, because, if they beat their master, they'd
feel like they wouldn't need any more training - but if they lost to a stranger,
they'd practice twice as hard. Roshi again implored Tenshinhan to choose the
right path. Back in the ring, Goku and Krillen began to fight and seemed evenly
matched. This goes on for a while. Both had improved their speed a lot since the
last tournament, and compliment each other on it. They continue to fight and
Krillen says he'll defeat Goku with his next move. He uses his bald head to
reflect sunlight and blinds Goku, like a modified Solar Flare. Taking advantage,
Krillen kicked Goku down, feeling he would land outside of bounds. But Goku
recovered and landed on both feet in the ring. Goku then claims that he'll win
with his next move, but Krillen takes a deep breath, somehow converts the oxygen
into hydrogen, and uses it to float, dodging Goku's attack. Both fighters share
a laugh at Krillen's ridiculous technique, and both state that they're having
fun, though Krillen is nervous. Goku says he wants to try out a new move on
Krillen. Krillen tells him to bring it on. Goku powers up a kamehameha, but
instead of firing it at Krillen like normal, he uses it for propulsion and
decimates Krillen. Krillen seems to be done for, but he surprises everyone by
getting back up! Krillen prepares a kamehameha of his own, but Goku tells him
it's useless. Krillen only smiles, and then fires the wave. Goku blocks it, but
Krillen suddenly appears behind him and grabs his tail! This was his intention
all along. Goku falls to the ring, paralyzed, and the announcer counts.
Tenshinhan is amused by this turn of events. At nine, Goku suddenly recovers,
leaping over Krillen! Krillen is amazed, and Goku tells him that he's been
training his tail these past three years as well, to remove that obvious
weakness. Unnerved, Krillen asks Goku "what's that over there?" Goku falls for
the obvious ploy and Krillen nails him with a powerful punch. This angers Goku,
who calls Krillen a "cheater," and tells him, "if that's the game we're going to
play, fine!" He then vanishes...or begins moving so fast that it seems he
vanished. Only Tenshinhan can follow his movements. Goku suddenly appears in
front of Krillen, makes a face at him, and knocks him out of the ring with a
series of fast blows.
Interesting facts:
This also marks the second time Krillen made it to the semis only to be
defeated. This is Goku and Krillen's only serious fight in the series.
FINALS
Match:
Goku versus Tenshinhan.
Winner:
Tenshinhan.
Backstory:
The entire tournament has been leading up to this battle, as has the history
between the rival Turtle and Crane schools. Goku has vowed to defeat Tenshinhan
for hurting his friend Yamcha, and Tenshinhan has vowed to take revenge on Goku
for murdering mercenary Tao (Crane’s brother). With both the Turtle and Crane
Hermits watching on, this will be the ultimate, decisive battle between their
schools.
Winning Move:
Tenshinhan uses tri-beam to decimate the ring. Without it, he knows that he will
win the match, as he can levitate, whereas Goku cannot. In midair, Goku uses a
kamehameha to propel himself toward Tenshinhan and delivers a devastating head
butt to his abdomen. Both fighters fall out into the streets near the stadium,
where Goku is hit by a car, causing him to lose the match.
Fight Details:
Goku and Tenshinhan strike their fighting stances. As soon as the announcer
shouts that the match has begun, Goku immediately rushes Tenshinhan, wasting no
time in bringing the fight to his opponent. Tenshinhan takes the early advantage
and nearly slams Goku through the ring with a powerful Dodompa ray. Goku bounces
back up, however, and initiates the same pattern of attack he used to eliminate
Krillen, moving all around the ring at incredible speeds in seemingly random
patterns. Tenshinhan is able to follow this, however, and strikes Goku as he
moves, halting his attack and retaining the advantage in the battle. Tenshinhan
pummels Goku until Goku lies motionless in the ring as all of his friends look
on in shock. Tenshinhan lifts Goku up by his shirt, telling him that he would
finish him soon. He then performed his "Volleyball Technique," bouncing Goku
around as if he were a volleyball, and then ultimately hitting him with the
deadly final "spike." Goku hit the ring looking as if he were half-dead. All of
Goku's friends are very concerned for his safety, but Goku suddenly pops back
up! Everyone is shocked that Goku is even able to stand. Goku says that
Tenshinhan is very strong, and he will use his full-power from here on out.
Tenshinhan thinks Goku is bluffing, but Goku soon takes control of the match,
knocking Tenshinhan across the ring and into the air. Goku prepares a
kamehameha, but decides not to fire it at the last second. (Master Roshi
theorizes that Goku decides not to fire because he knew Tenshinhan would have
dodged the attack.) Tenshinhan lands and recovers, then tells Goku that he's
barely hurt. Tenshinhan tells Goku that rush of battle, and the energy of the
crowd, are exciting to him, and after a moment's meditation, he is ready to
continue the battle. The two begin to fight again and now they're matching each
other blow for blow. This continues on for a while, and they fight at an
incredible pace. Goku decides to use the afterimage technique, giving him a
slight, temporary advantage over Tenshinhan. Tenshinhan is left lying motionless
in the ring and Goku thinks he's won. But Tenshinhan suddenly recovers,
surprising everyone except the Crane Hermit and Chouzu. Words are exchanged and
Tenshinhan decides to go for the solar flare. Goku is prepared to defend against
this attack, however, and steals Master Roshi's sunglasses out of nowhere.
Tenshinhan doesn't see this and is caught completely off-guard and toppled by a
powerful punch to the abdomen from Goku. Tenshinhan recovers as Goku is giving
the sunglasses back to Roshi and drills Goku with a kick to the head so powerful
that it breaks the sunglasses in Goku's hand! Goku and Tenshinhan go to fight
again when Goku is suddenly halted in his tracks, paralyzed and unable to defend
himself against Tenshinhan's punch. The paralysis breaks after Tenshinhan's
punch connects. Tenshinhan is unaware of any foul play. Goku and Tenshinhan
continue to fight, taking their battle to the sky. Crane Hermit asks Chouzu to
paralyze Goku again, and this time, Tenshinhan nearly kicks him out of the ring.
Goku saves himself with a kamehameha. In the ring, Chouzu and Crane's cheap
tactics allow Tenshinhan to mercilessly pummel Goku, and Master Roshi and Yamcha
begin to suspect foul play, though Tenshinhan is still unaware. Goku is left
lying in the middle of the ring. Yamcha sees Chouzu use his psychic abilities to
paralyze Goku and tells Launch and Bulma. Goku accuses of Tenshinhan of being a
coward, but Tenshinhan doesn't know what he's talking about. Tenshinhan
continues to pummel Goku and Launch decides she's had enough of this. She
attacks Chouzu with a large mallet, but the Crane Hermit easily blocks this and
dismisses her with a single tap. Back in the ring, Tenshinhan hits Goku with a
particularly devastating blow, alarming his friends. As Goku struggles to
recover, Tenshinhan begins to suspect the circumstances of his dominance over
Goku. He asks Chouzu if he has been interfering with the battle and Chouzu tells
him that he has. Tenshinhan is enraged at his master's lack of confidence in him
and tells them to let him defeat Goku on his own. The argument escalates, with
Tenshinhan claiming that he's not a killer, and only wants to defeat Goku and
win the title. Crane asks Chouzu to paralyze both Tenshinhan and Goku so he can
kill them both, but Chouzu refuses. Enraged, Crane Hermit prepares to kill
Chouzu, but is suddenly the victim of a kamehameha from Master Roshi, hurling
him far away from the arena. Goku has a newfound respect for Tenshinhan and the
battle begins again. Tenshinhan lets Goku pummel him in return for Chouzu's
interference. Afterwards, Tenshinhan promises to defeat Goku with his next move,
and proceeds to grow two new arms from his shoulder-blades! Everyone is shocked
by this. With the extra arms, it's all Goku can do to defend himself and he's
nearly knocked out of the ring! Tenshinhan continues to pummel Goku, so Goku
decides to one-up Tenshinhan and use eight arms! He uses afterimages for the
extra ones, and evens up the match. Goku and Tenshinhan collide in spectacular
fashion, and both collapse to the ring. Both arise at 8 and after a brief
exchange of dialogue, continue their battle. Goku attacks Tenshinhan's leg and
topples him, then applies a boston crab. After suffering in the hold for a
while, Tenshinhan retaliates by grabbing Goku's throat with his two extra arms,
choking him. Goku weakens and Tenshinhan uses his legs to throw Goku across the
ring and into the wall dividing the ring and the fighter's arena. Goku manages
to recover and stares down Tenshinhan again. Tenshinhan does away with his two
extra arms and prepares to perform his ultimate attack. He warns Goku that this
move could easily kill him, so he'd better dodge. Chouzu begs Tenshinhan not to
perform the move, while Roshi warn the stubborn Goku to get out of the ring as
fast as he can. Goku stands his ground, though, and Tenshinhan prepares the
attack. Chouzu prays for Tenshinhan's safety. In a blinding flash of light and a
huge explosion, the ring is destroyed. Tenshinhan floats alone in the air; Goku
is nowhere to be seen...until Chouzu spots him high in the air, above
Tenshinhan. Tenshinhan soon spots him as well and flies up to him. Goku and
Tenshinhan exchange dialogue, and Tenshinhan tells Goku that, with the ring
gone, there is nothing left for Goku to do except fall to the ground and lose
the match. (Tenshinhan can fly, and thus, is in no danger of falling.) Goku says
he's not done yet, however, and prepares a kamehameha. Tenshinhan tells Goku
that it's useless against him, but rather than fire the wave, Goku uses it for
propulsion and catches Tenshinhan off guard with a powerful headbutt to the
abdomen. Both fighters are falling now. Goku uses a pathetic kamehameha to slow
his descent somewhat, but as both fighters fall into streets near the arena,
Goku, falling more slowly than Tenshinhan, is hit by a car, and knocked to the
ground before Tenshinhan, giving Tenshinhan the narrow victory!
Interesting facts:
This is the second time Goku made it to the finals and was defeated. Also the 2nd
longest fight in DB, and the introduction of the Kikoho, or Tri-beam. Also, it
can be argued that this is the very first good vs. evil one-on-one in all of
DBZGT.
