- How a cel is made -
1.) storyboard of the sequences are created
2.) gengas (or rough pencil tests) are animated giving an idea of the animation for that seq.
3.) a douga (or sketch), is created which consists of normal pencil and color pencil to define where the different colors etc. go
4.) the douga (or sketch) is then transferred to cel paper (celluloid paper/acetate) through a Xerox type machine
5.) A Painter then begins to paint the cel from the "Back" of the cel so the paint will absorb through to the cel to the other side
6.) airbrushed effects like ki effects or wind lines are seperate layers usually
7.) backgrounds are made then the different layers are placed against the background and photographed
there are a few different types of cels
- OP cel (opening seq., think Chala Head Chala or We Got Power)
- Key Cels (drawn by senior animators, usually close up shots or important scenes, etc.)
- Key End Cels (the last cel of a seq.)
- A1 Key End (the ONLY cel in an entire seq.) Maybe only the layers for the mouth/eyes change
- Book Cel (means that the cel is sandwhiched between a background and another layer that acts as a foreground)
- Bank Cel (another name for an OP Cel)
- Pan Cel (For panning(moving) up or down... left or right)
