From PC Game World "On its first two days on sale in the UK last Friday and Saturday, GTA: Vice City sold over 250 000 copies. The race to become the UK's first ever million selling video game has just been won by, British produced, Grand Theft Auto 3, which has become not only the best selling video game ever in the UK but has also taken the world by storm. The GTA series has sold over 12 million copies worldwide to date. The 18 rated game, will become the first recipient of a new ELSPA Diamond Million Seller Award. Now its successor, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, also developed by the British studio, Rockstar North, looks set to be even bigger. On its first two days on sale in the UK last Friday and Saturday, it sold over 250,000 copies, an unprecedented achievement for any game. Previous fast sellers have taken over three weeks to reach this level. Vice City is now tipped to sell a million copies faster than any other previous game.
According to trade body, ELSPA (The Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association), publishers of the official UK games charts, the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) success story is just one example of how computer and video games now dominate the entertainment field in the UK both in terms of consumer spend and also in exports. In the UK, consumers spend more on video games products than on buying or renting videos or trips to the cinema. And as the music industry announces an all time low in sales of singles, with a decline of 14%, the games market announces a record-breaking year-on-year increase of 13% - over ten times more is now spent on video games software than on music singles. The Computer and video games sector also has the healthiest export record of all British entertainment forms, far in excess of British films and TV programmes. The success of British-developed games is not just confined to home soil: one third of all games sold in Europe originate in the UK, equal to the market share of US games and well ahead of Japanese titles."
