Irwin Toys........Bankrupt?

TORONTO - Venerable toy maker Irwin Toy Ltd. has obtained bankruptcy protection from its creditors and is cutting almost half its staff as part of a major restructuring, the company announced Monday.

Irwin said it was granted an order by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. The busines is also seeking protection from creditors in the United States.

Irwin said it was laying off 135 of its 308 employees and was talking to potential buyers with a view to selling the company before Christmas.

Irwin executives said the company missed key shipping dates to U.S. customers this summer because they weren't able to churn out enough product and lost $16 million US in sales because of that.

"We are taking this course of action to allow the company to address its challenges and protect the interests of our employees and creditors," Jean-Rene Halde, the president and CEO of Irwin said.

"There have already been serious expressions of interest by parties interested in purchasing segments of Irwin's business. If consummated, these sales could form the basis of a company restructuring or a sale of advantage to creditors and will hopefully result in saving as many jobs as possible," Halde said.

"Unfortunately, the changes being announced today have resulted in many of our employees leaving the company. While this was a necessary business decision, I deeply regret its effect on employees, especially at this time of year," he added.

Irwin Toy was taken private in March 2001 by Livgroup, a privately-held company owned by Richard Ivey and Halde., in an all-cash deal worth $55 million.

Founded in 1926, Irwin makes and distributes such children's toys as Slinky, Etch-a-Sketch, Caillou and Dragon Ball Z .

Follow up:

Irwin Toy’s filing for bankruptcy will indeed be a “hiccup” in the production of Dragonball toys, but it should hopefully be a small one.

According to sources at FUNimation, Irwin’s bankruptcy is not a reflection of the performance of the DBZ brand. The brand itself continues to be strong in both sales and overall popularity.

FUNimation is already in talks with 4 major toy companies to take up the distribution reins for IF Labs. The company that picks up the distribution for the IF Labs figures will most probably acquire all existing molds, designs, etc. as part of the deal. The transition from Irwin as a distributor to a new company should be fairly seamless from a consumer point of view. The new distributor should be announced within a week.

It is unknown at this time if the new IF Labs distributor will also continue the current Irwin Dragonball lines, or if they will go to a separate company. The rights to those lines and figures (and all associated molds, etc) will probably be subject to Canadian bankruptcy court proceedings. I would speculate that if the new IF Labs distributor chooses not to pursue the Irwin lines, then someone else will. However, two competing companies with the same license would definitely spell trouble for the one or the other.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the toys are just that, toys. Any toy delays or cancellations resulting from the bankruptcy are minor concerns, compared to the concerns of the 135 people who lost their jobs. Don’t let problems with toys overshadow your concerns for fellow human beings.

Cartoon Network has acquired broadcast rights for Trigun, Lupin the Third and Reign

"Excerpts from AOL Time Warner Press Release:

Cartoon Network today announced the acquisition of three animé series that will air during Adult Swim, its highly-rated late night block of animation for adults 18-34. The three series are Lupin the Third, Reign and Trigun. Lupin the Third follows the adventures of the greatest thief in the world. Lupin is a globetrotting crook, as well as a suave gentleman. Aided by two partners, expert marksman Jigen and samurai master Goemon, Lupin's mad-capped adventures take him around the world stealing extraordinary treasures, helping damsels in distress, staying one step ahead of Inspector Zenigata and matching wits with rival thief, beautiful and dangerous Fujiko.

Trigun takes place in the distant future on a deserted planet. Vash the Stampede is a gunfighter with a legend so ruthless he has a $60,000,000,000 bounty on his head. Entire towns evacuate at the rumor of his arrival. But the real Vash the Stampede, the enigmatic and conflicted lead character in Trigun, is more heroic, even though he usually acts like a complete idiot.

Alexander the Great was the world's most powerful warrior. Reign is a 21st century science-fiction retelling of the legend of this Macedonian king. A visual masterpiece, Reign tells the story of Alexander's's triumphs through engaging characters, intricate plots and glorious battle sequences.

Lupin the Third will air Monday-Thursday at 12 midnight (ET, PT), beginning Monday, January 13. Programming information for both Reign and Trigun will be announced at a later date."

-Subject: TOONAMI to make big decision
Posted on Wednesday, November 13 2002 -=- By {-SzR-} drop me a line
-According to The New York Post, Jamie Kellner (you know him as the evil exec that's responsible for reducing Toonami by an hour last year) IS GONNA BE FIRED! Yes! Vengeance is ours!

Here is the article

Jamie Kellner is due for a big payday.
The chairman of AOL Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting division is to get roughly $65 million from the company next year for his stake in the WB television network, The Post has learned.

The expected payout is fueling speculation among insiders that Kellner will take the money and run - or get the boot. But Kellner and AOL Time Warner deny it.

Kellner, along with Time Warner and the Tribune Company, formed the WB Network in 1995. The exec personally owns about 11 percent of the company, and AOL Time Warner is obligated to buy out Kellner's stake next year.

The Tribune Company owns 22.5 percent of WB, with AOL Time Warner owning the rest. Without naming Kellner, AOL Time Warner stated in its 2001 annual report that it is "in contract to acquire" an 11 percent stake in WB in January 2003.

The company would not confirm the value of the stake, but Merrill Lynch's Jessica Reif Cohen values it at roughly $65 million. As part of the contract, the senior management team at WB will get a cut of the payout.

Kellner's looming windfall has sparked speculation about his future with the media giant. Money aside, the political sea change within the company may not bode well for Kellner's future.

Kellner was close to former CEO Gerald Levin, who installed Kellner as head of Turner Broadcasting in 2001, essentially to fill Ted Turner's shoes. But now Turner is back, and he and Kellner are not best buddies.

As head of Turner Broadcasting, Kellner took over CNN, TNT, Headline News, The Cartoon Network and the company's sports teams - the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Thrashers and Atlanta Hawks.

Levin stepped down earlier this year, and former co-chief operating officer Bob Pittman - who was also close to Kellner - lost out to Dick Parsons in a bid to replace Levin. Now, as Parsons consolidates his power, Kellner could be on the outs, sources say.

Last week, there were reports that two senior executives close to Pittman - Mayo Stuntz and Marshall Cohen - were hitting the exit. Stuntz was in charge of cross-divisional initiatives, while Cohen oversaw consumer and marketing research.

But Kellner has about two years left on his contract, says Brad Turrell, Kellner's spokesman. "He has stated publicly that he wants to stay at least until the end of his contract," Turrell said.

An AOL Time Warner spokesperson said, "Jamie is committed to the company and the company is committed to Jamie."

Kellner is known to have butted heads with Turner, and Turner's re-emergence as a powerful figure within the company - he re-upped as vice chairman late last year, and is believed to be taking a more active role within the company lately - could make things difficult for Kellner.

Kellner has had a long and diverse media career. In addition to being a founder of the WB Network, he was president of the Fox Broadcasting Company from its inception in 1986 to 1993.

He is also founder, chairman and CEO of ACME Communications, a publicly traded company that owns 10 broadcast television stations across the country, nine of which are affiliated with the WB Network. He owns about 6 percent of the company, a stake valued at roughly $6 million based on current market prices.

Well I hope this brings a welcome change to TOONAMI as far as more anime being shown.
Thanks to Masenko for the heads up

- 1. The new Trailor for the DBZ Budokai game is out. You can view it at Dragonball Z Budokai Trailor
- This game is NOTHING like DBGT Final Bout. The paly is much more fluent and there are way more characters and MOVES to be done here. I do NOT understand why so many people have a misconception that this game will be another DBGT Final Bout game. I mean if you check the Dragonball Z Budokai Trailor you will realize this game is far more reaching than DBGT Final Bout could ever be. I believe this game is a very good introduction to a long series of DBZ video games. I do want a DBZ/GT game that is based around the METAL GEAR SOLID concept. But hey, we gotta work with what we got. I do hope all of you buy the new DBZ Budokai game as to show Infogrames that the DBZ/GT games are very popular and that it would be to their advantage to make MORE of them. Just my final 2 cents on the game. Once again Dragonball Z Budokai Trailor.
