Anime Shell XG // Anime // Infomation // Devil Hunter Yohko ->
Well, you can't exactly call the idea original, but this is the first piece of animation that AD Vision translated, and it set the tone for a good portion of their future releases--somewhat sleazy dumb fun. This particular entry into the "good dumb fun" category has a horror theme to it, and serves up all the basics: Fun characters, (semi) skimpy costumes, plenty of action, and a dash of humor. In terms of plot, there's not much to be found here, although the basic idea is passable (and good enough to spawn several sequels). This one is a little more serious than some of its kin, and lighter in terms of body count and splatter-factor, but a little heavier on the adult themes. Still, despite it's relative lack of gore and a fair amount of humor, it does a reasonable job of keeping up the horror movie feel.
The characters are mostly people we've all met before, though Yohko's rather worldly mom (although she's only there for couple of scenes) is somewhat amusing. On the other hand, the character designs are nice enough, and the characters are likable, if not original. Yohko's outfit and sword in particular look cool, and she's got some of the flashiest braids this side of Battle Athletes. The rest of the art is somewhat plain, but the setting for the final showdown looks kinda cool, and there are a few mildly creepy school-after-hours scenes. The animation isn't spectacular, but isn't bad either, and the action is fast and fun (the final swordfight was neat, and I particularly liked the sports equipment duel between the two elders in the Mano family).
As for acting, there is nothing noteworthy, although the Japanese performances are solid enough; Hisakawa Aya voices Yohko, and she also sings the end theme (which, like many of the other Devil Hunter Yohko songs, is actually pretty good--spunk-filled but with enough of an edge to keep it from being too annoying). The subtitles are the first in the long AD Vision tradition of spicing up the dialogue a bit with some additional one-liners, and otherwise unremarkable but decent. I cannot speak for the dub, although I've heard that Yohko sounds like a valley girl (whether that's good or bad, I'll leave up to you).
Devil Hunter Yohko is basically a slightly silly horror movie with all the classic dumb fun elements in place. I seem to remember there being a lot of hype surrounding this video at one point, and although I think it was somewhat undeserved, it's still plenty of fun and there's more to see in the series if you like the beginning. Recommended if your thing is not entirely serious horror movies, or if you're just looking for some demon-fightin' fun.
