What on Earth Happened to Pokemon?
|
|
Neon Genesis Evangelion is quite possibly the most popular anime series in the world (assuming we're ignoring Pokemon). This was an epic, heart-pounding, soul-ripping, (and all that other crap) series that rocked Japan, blasted America, and even ripped through Australia (where it appeared on TV, not once but twice in a row!) And it is easy to see why it is so popular.
Evangelion has one of the best stories I've ever seen; the overview (giant aliens attacking Earth--teenagers in huge robots have to stop them) isn't particularly original, but what Gainax did with that idea is spectacular. The characters are amazingly developed and detailed, and drive the entire series. The plot has been twisted back on itself in a massive web of intrigue and mystery: what are the angels? Why are they attacking Earth? What are the Evangelions? What is Commander Ikari's secret agenda? Who does Kaji really serve? What secrets is Ritsuko keeping? You get the idea.
The series is brilliantly designed with clear, tightly drawn animation, and an amazing soundtrack. The Evangelion designs, though rather simplistic by giant robot standards, look magnificent, and move (and fight) like a dream. But a quick note on the voices: although I said I was reviewing both dubbed and subbed, I have only seen minimal of the subbed, and I honestly can't stand it. The voices are, if not awful, at least far inferior to the ADV english voice actors. They are just all pitched off key, a few octaves to high or low, or are pitched with the wrong accents on the dialogue. Also, the translation of the subtitles is downright shoddy by comparison, and the lip synch errors are glaringly noticable, even though you are usually concentrating on reading the subtitles. I know almost no-one will agree with me, but I can't stand the subtitled Evangelion.
Anyone who likes anime has seen Evangelion; this is a law of anime. If you haven't seen Evangelion and you are on this site then something is seriously wrong with you. Evangelion is, in my opinion, the greatest anime drama series ever made (although I haven't seen more than one episode of Vision of Escaflowne) and it scores a perfect 5 from me.
...Okay, so I made the unforgivable mistake. I gave my personal opinion in the review, rather than my professional one. Well I'm sorry, but I have a very strong bias towards Evangelion. My sincere apologies towards anyone I inadvertedly insulted.
From a more "professoinal" viewpoint, Evangelion isn't quite perfect, merely extremely good. You have to admit that the animation quality is quite high, although it obviously isn't an AKIRA scale production. And admittedly, the plot is rather confusing, but not THAT hard. Maybe I'm just too smart, because I had very little trouble "getting" Evangelion. There probably has been better mecha action (I haven't seen much mecha apart from Macross stuff, which is totally different) but if you prefer substance over flashiness, I personally really like the action. There were a few clunker episodes (Such as "The Human Creation") but as a whole, this is a very enjoyable, very deep series.
I still can't see while people would dislike Eva, unless they have very narrow taste (e.g only liking gory action, only liking comedy etc.) although I can understand people not thinking its the greatest thing ever.
