Urusei Yatsura is a classic love story. Boy meets cute alien girl. Cute alien girl falls in love with boy. Cute alien girl wants to marry boy. Boy tries desperately to avoid this fate. A touching tale that has been told in many forms and many cultures throughout time.... Or maybe not. Anyway, the hero of our story, if hero is the right word, is Ataru Moroboshi. A normal teenager in all respects except that his lecherous behavior is legendary, even for a sixteen-year-old guy. When the aliens invade earth, they decide to give earth a sporting chance. If a randomly selected earthling can defeat their champion in a game of tag, they'll call off the invasion. The randomly selected earthling is, of course, Ataru Moroboshi. Ataru at first refuses, but when he learns his opponent is Lum, the incredibly cute daughter of the alien warlord, he reconsiders. The game begins, and Ataru learns to his misfortune that Lum can fly. He manages to win on the last using a truly dirty trick, and the earth is saved! Unfortunately, Lum misinterprets a comment of Ataru's to be a marriage proposal, and immediately moves in with him, much to the frustration of Shinobu, Ataru's long-suffering sometimes girlfriend. Ataru, despite finding Lum attractive, can't deal with the idea of commitment, and so the basis for the series is laid....

Of course, there are plenty of other characters, most of whom are either trying to steal Ataru from Lum or vice versa. But Lum will have nothing to do with her other suitors and she has her hands full trying to keep Ataru away from other women. Her ploys include persuasion, disapproval, pleading, and when all else fails (which is 99% of the time), she administers massive electric shocks (another one of her alien abilities). Throughout the series, Ataru attempts to drive Lum away time after time, but Lum refuses to ever give up on her "Darling".
