Prologue: The series begins with Goku, a small and naive young boy, with a monkey tail, who is living all alone in the wild at the age of 12. His grandpa Gohan taught Goku all that he knew about fighting and Martial Arts and for a 12 year old kid, Goku is very strong. Unknowingly, one full-moon night, Goku transformed to an ape and trampled his father, but he doesn't remember how his grandpa was killed or anything that happened that night. He belives that he slept through the whole thing.
Its a beautiful day and Goku is out hunting for lunch. he catches a very huge fish and on his way home a car accidentally crashes into him. Thinking that he had died, the girl driver got off the car, but Goku rises and destroys the car. Then the girl introduces herself that she is a girl and her name is Bulma. Goku invites her over to his house and what should happen, but we find out that Bulma is out hunting for the dragonballs. At Goku's house, Bulma finds the four star Dragonball and insists on letting her have it, but Goku refuses. Then she tells Goku the legend of the dragon and how it comes out when all seven Dragonballs are gathered and grants a single wish. Goku agrees after a lot of hesitating and then, both Goku and Bulma start of for an exciting new adventure.
But during this, we are also shown that an evil blue dwarf named Emperor Pilaf with his agents, Mai and Shao, are collecting the dragonballs themselves for world-domination

Emperor Pilaf Saga: Both Bulma and Goku set off with their search for Dragonballs and Bulma notices that the next Dragonball was a few 700 miles away or so. During this they camp at a capsule-house in the wilderness and both Goku and Bulma become familiar with the other. The next day, a turtle comes near their camp-site asking for directions to the beach. Goku offers to help the turtle and carries him all the way to the beach. Bulma also follows. At the beach, the turtle tells them to wait, while he goes and gets his Master. After a short time, the turtle returns with the Turtle hermit who decides to reward Goku, who helped the turtle, with the Kinto Un Cloud or the Flying Nimbus. Only pure of heart are able to ride these clouds, but Goku handles it no problem and flies the cloud with ease. The Bulma asks for a reward too and sees a Dragonball hanging on Roshi's neck. She asks for the Dragonball at the price of showing him her panties, only to know later that she wasn't wearing any and that Goku had switched them the other night.
So the duo set off again in pursuit of the next dragonball, which is present in a village that is being terrorized by a shape-shifting monster named Oolong. Goku and Bulma dela with an old lady that if Goku drives away Oolong, they will get the Dragonball. Goku soon reveals that Oolong is actually a pig and that he can only hold a shape for 5 minutes and then he returns to normal. They get this dragonball too and off they go for the next dragonball.
During their hunt for the dragonball, they accidentally get lost in a desert with no food or water. And along comes a desert-bandit named Yamcha. He tries to steal the trio off their possessions, but Goku puts up a good fight. While they are still fighting, Bulma awakens and Yamcha is frozen with fear. This is because he has a fear for pretty girls of his own age. He and his accomplice, Puar, another shape-shifter, retreat and go back to their hideout. Yamcha also follows the trio and so do Emperoe Pilaf's henchmen. They fail for a couple of time before the trio sets off again to Fire Mountain or Mt. Frying Pan. Ooloang refuses to come along and tells them of the legend of the terrible Ox King or the Bull Demon Lord. He tells them that the Ox King kills everyone and anyone who comes near his mountain. It seems that he ordered a witch to set the mountain on fire so that no thieves may try to steal his treasure, but unfortunately he got locked out. The trio reach the mountain and Goku sets off on the Flying Nimbus to try and go inside the castle. His tail catches on fire and he quickly falls inside a pond. Meanwhile, Bulma and Oolong come face to face with the Ox King. Goku comes and spills out that they were searching for the Dragonballs. Goku and the Ox King begin to fight and Goku uses his power pole and attacks Ox King. Ox King becomes curious and asks Goku who gave him the Power Pole. Goku answers that his Grandpa Gohan gave him and the Ox King says that he knew Gohan well. He asks Goku to help him by bringing Master Roshi over to put off the fire and also to find the Ox King's daughter, Chi Chi. Goku does these favors and Master Roshi agrees to put off the fire himself. However he asks Goku to ask Bulma to come on a moonlight stroll with him. Goku agrees and so does Bulma.
Roshi displays enormous strength by powering up to a massive size and doing a single Kamehameha blast that puts off the full fire as well as destroys the castle. Goku tries to do the same blast on the car and he does it, but the car is destroyed. Bulma finds the dragonball and with the help of the Ox King, they get another capsule car. Master Roshi also accepts Goku as a student and tells him to come and receive training from him.
While searching for the next dragonball, they come to a village that is being terrorized by the Bunny Gang. Goku defeats the two henchemen of the Bunny Gang and then the Boss Rabbit himself, who has a touch that can turn anyone into a carrot. Goku send them off to the moon. While still searching for the last and final dragonball which is in Pilaf's castle, Pilaf's henchman, Shao, steals away all their dragonballs and goes off to the castle. Fortunately, Goku had his dragonball hidden. Yamcha comes along and decides to help them out by giving them a lift. Together they reach the castle, but soon they face many traps and are also trapped in one. In order to get the dragonball from the good guys, Pilaf sprays Sleeping Gas all over the small stone cage they are in and everyone faint. Pilaf gets the dragonball and is about to make his wish, when the good guys awake and chase Pilaf.(They didn't close the door) But once again, the good guys are trapped in the same cage again. Goku does a Kamehameha and blasts a small hole through the sone. Puar and Oolong change into bats and try to spoil the wish-making.
The dragon is summoned and it is huge. The sky darkens and the dragon asks Pilaf to make his wish. Pilaf is nervous. Just when he is about to make his wish, Oolong gets enraged and shouts out his wish for the world's most comfortable underwear!!! Oolong gets his wish and the dragon vanishes and the dragonballs are spread all over the earth. Pilaf gets mad and encages the good guys once again in a special triple-steeled room that will burn the good guys when the sun rises. Goku and Yamcha try as they might, but the room is still to thick. Then Goku tells about the legend of a monster that comes out when the moon is full and how it killed his grandpa. On hearing this, the others are terrified and tell Goku to look at the moon just to ensure that he was not the monster. Goku looks at the moon and for a second, he does nothing. But suddenly, he gets wild and hair starts growing all over him. He turns into a big huge ape and he destroys the overhead ceiling thus giving the good guys a chance to escape.
Goku is wild and he has no control over himself. He destroys the whole castle. Pilaf and his henchemen shoot missiles. Goku is hurt and everybody thinks he is dead. But he gets up and it causes him more anger. Goku commes running over to where the good guys are and he picks up Bulma and is about to eat her. Yamcha quickly makes a wooden sword and tries it on Goku's tail, but the swod breaks and Goku gets angry. Yamcha holds on to Goku's tail and this weakens him. Then Yamcha quickly tells Puar to turn into a scissors and snipe Goku's tail off. This does the trick and Goku changes back to normal. He doesn't remember anything and he is naked. So Oolong gives some of his clothes and Goku is good as knew. Then he notices his tail is gone and has a little problem standing up and running without his tail. Bulma gets her perfect boyfriend, Yamcha and Yamcha is not afraid of Bulma anymore. Bulma and Yamcha along with Puar and Oolong decide to go back to the city, while Goku says he is off to training on Master Roshi's island.

Preparation for the 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai: Goku sets off to Master Roshi's island to receive his training. But unknown to Goku and/ or Master Roshi, Krillin, a bald headed Buddhist monk from the Orinji Temple, is also on his way to receive training. But Goku arrives before Krillin and is faced with his first task, to find a suitable girl for Master Roshi. Since Goku knows nothing about girls, he first brings a large and repulsive woman. Mater Roshi is enraged and he sets off Goku once again to find a better looking girl. This time Goku is successful, but later Master Roshi learns that she is a mermaid. The mermaid smacks Rishi and promptly swims off. By this time, Krillin finally arrives in a boat. At first, he is not accepted as a student, but after offering a dozen porno magazines, Master Roshi accepts Krillin as a student. Roshi tells him to accompany Goku and find a suitable girl. At this time, they come upon a town that is searching for a criminal named Launch. Unknown to everybody, Launch is the split personality of Raichi. This personality comes out whenever Raichi sneezes. Goku and Krillin find Raichi and Krillin thinks that Raichi will be the suitable girl for Master Roshi and so they bring her over. But they soon learn all about her split personality as well and try to not make her sneeze.
Both the boys are accepted as students. But Roshi feels that the island they are on is very small and so they move to another larger island where many people are living. The first test is running a 100 yards and to check how fast you run it. Goku and Krillin run very impressive speeds, but Roshi defeats them easily by running it in half their time. For their next test, Roshi takes a small rock and paints the turtle symbol on it and throws it into the jungle. Whoever finds it first will have dinner and the other will not. Krillin tries to make his own rock with a turtle symbol, but Roshi sees through the trick and throws it out. Goku finds the real one, but Krillin manages to get the rock from naive Goku. Goku doesn't get to eat dinner, but unfortunately for the others, what they had for dinner was poisonous puffer-fish. The others fall sick and they take the next day off.
The next day, the real training begins which includes delivering milk, plowing a field, swimming, studying and also working at a construction site. But the boys keep going on with this daily routine just with the thought of the 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai. Its a World Martial Arts Tournament where all of Earth's greatest fighters come and fight under one roof. Roshi informs that the second day, they will be wearing 20 kg. turtle shells on their back. They do this too and they get used to it day after day. They go on with this training for about two months until they are able to move a massive boulder. Only one month away for the Tenkaichi Budoukai, Roshi tells the boys that from then on, they they will be wearing 40 kg. turtle shells. Bt during all this, another fighter, Yamcha has benn training as well in the wild. After completing his training, he returns to West City looking almost like a wild-man.

The 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai: The day of the tournament finally arrives and Goku, Krilin and Master Roshi fly over to the place where the tournament is being held and they sign up. Yamch, Bulma, Puar and Oolong also come along. Yamcha signs up while Bulma, Oolong and Puar plan to cheer from the stands. The three of them easily win the preliminary rounds, but Goku feels that they shouldn't use their full power on the fighters there. However Krillin uses his full power on his old rivals from the Orinji Temple. Yamcha also easily wins over his opponents. The three of them get good places in the eight men brackt.
Now the real tournament starts and the fight is between Krillin and Bacterium, a wild man, who has never taken a bath in his entire life and is worst smelling than a skunk. Bacterium uses his foul stench to distract his opponents and the same happens in this case too. But Goku cheers encouragingly from the stand for Krillin. Then Goku reminds Krillin that he didn't have a nose and that the stink was just in his imagination. Krillin gets the idea and he takes the upper hand in the fight and wins it.
The next match is between Yamcha and the mysterious Jackie Chun. Yamcha uses all of his special tricks including his Wolf Fang Fist, but Jackie Chun displays amazing skills and defeats yamcha with ease. The third match is between Nam and Ranfan. Nam is in the tournament with a mission, because he wants to get water for his village. Ranfan tries to distract Nam using her looks, but Nam snaps out of the trance and defeats Ranfan. And so the semi-finals start.
The first final match in the bracket is between Goku and Giran, a giant dinosaur-like creature whose spit can bind other fighters in a strangling hold. Goku is binded by this subtsance and Giran throws Goku out of the ring. Everyone is sure that Goku is going to lose, but Goku calls the Flying Nimbus and thus he escapes the fall. But the judges decide that since they can't disqualify Goku, they warn Goku can't use the cloud any more. Goku breaks the bind and they continue to fight. This time, Giran cathes Goku by his leg and practically uses him as a punching bag. But just as Giran is about to throw Goku out of the ring, Goku's tail grows back. Bulma, Oolong, Puar and Yamcha are terrified. But Goku defeats Giran and so the next match follows. Now there are only four competitors,Goku, Nam, Krillin and Jackie Chun. The first match is between Krillin and Jackie Chun. Krillin fights good and tries his best to defeat Jackie Chun. But Jackie Chun is too strong ad defeats Krillin. The next match is between Goku and Nam. Both Nam and Goku put up an excellent fight. Nam uses the Aerial attack to weaken Goku for quite an amount of time. But Goku still fights and he wins the fight. Nam is disappointed that he lost his match and now his village would starve to death. But Jackie Chun reads Nam's mind and gives him a capsule. Then Jackie Chun reveals to be Master Roshi himself. Nam is surprised and asks him why Roshi came to fight. Roshi explains that he knew that both Krillin and Goku are already at the highest level of fighting. But he din't want them to know that and wanted them to think that there are stronger fighters out there. Nam is grateful, but Roshi asks him a favor--to dress up as Roshi himself and sit in the audience. Once that was done, Jackie Chun goes to Yamcha, who was suspecting Jackie Chun to be Master Roshi, and tells him to look at the crowd. There Nam was sitting as Master Roshi and so Yamcha apologizes to Jackie Chun.
And now, the final match between Jackie Chun(Master Roshi) and Goku. Both the fighters duke it out with amzing strength and speed, but not one is able to get the upper hand. Jackie Chun uses many of his special and also weird techniques, but Goku copies them exactly and returns it to Jackie Chun, maybe even better. The fighters also fal;l out of the ring many times, but they get back in the ring with their own ways. Jackie Chun even tries a mighty Kamehameha, but Goku returns it with one of his own that is equal to Chun's. Jackie Chun gets fed up and tries to end the match by technique that passes electricity through the opponent's body. Goku is paralyzed by this attack, but suddenly he looks at the full moon and this again causes his transformation. Goku is wild once again and isn't even aware where he is. He beraks the bind and destroys the stadium pretty bad. Jackie Chun destroys the moon in an attempt to bring back Goku to his normal form. It works and both the fighters are exhausted. They agree for hand-to-hand combat only for the rest of the match. The fighters, even though exhausted, display amazing skills and strength as well as speed in the fight as they exchange kicks, blows and punches with one another. The fighters kick the other and they fall to the ground, but Goku takes a harder kick. Both the fighters are down for the count of ten, and so the judges suddenly announce that whoever can stand first and say "I guess I am the winner" will be the winner. Goku stands up before Jackie Chun, but doesn't say the line "I guess I am the winner" and so he falls down exhausted. But Jackie Chun gets up and he says the line and so he is announced the winner. Jackie Chun goes off and takes off his disguise, now got the million zeni. But his million zeni is spent when Goku, hungry, eats all the food in the restaurant and spends the money on the food.
