GOHAN:
Gohan is the first son of Goku and Chi Chi and the most powerful Saiyan in Dragonball Z. Being half-saiyan and half-human gives him extraordinary strength that can't be achieved by neither race alone. But, this extraordinary strength is only revealed at brief periods during his early parts of his life. But later on, he achieves a respectable position in the Z fighters team and also learns how to control and release his power when he wills.
Chi Chi wants Gohan to study hard and get a Ph.D or some other degree and get a good job. At first he somehow avoids his mom's dreams and escapes from education. Since he has Saiyan blood, he also has the adrenaline for fighting. He avoids studying and often goes out fighting. Gohan has at many times saved the day, but he has also dropped his nerve at certain times. During the Saiyan saga, at one particular point of a strategy formed by Piccolo and Krillin, Gohan is supposed to attack Nappa with an energy attack and kill him, but at the last moment, Gohan loses nerve and flees. And later on, his loss of nerve also costs the loss of Piccolo's life. One thing that Gohan can't stand and gets him angry is if anyone hurts any of his friends, it doesn't matter who. Gohan releases all his latent energy in the Cell Saga when Cell attacks the other Z fighters with the Cell Jr.'s. This way he achieves a new level of a Super Saiyan, but his own confidence later costs his father's life. Gohan then takes an oath to himself that he will no longer let his friends down.
He arrives close to death's door in the Majin Buu saga, but the Supreme Kai rescues him and he arrives at the Supreme Kai's world to master the Z sword which is supposed to increase his power. Unfortunately, he breaks it, but the elder Kai from 15 generations ago appears and prepares to raise and bring out all his hidden energy which has been lying latent due to his ignorance of fighting after the Cell Games. Gohan yet again achieves a newer and such a powerful state that the once-dominant Majin Buu falls on his knees to such a level of power.
Yes Gohan has had his ups and downs in his life, but his own conscience often blinds him from his own true power. If he had just chose the right path for his life, he would still remain dominant in the Z team. But, unfortunately he doesn't and becomes a teacher in a school due to Chi Chi's persistence for his education. Naturally, he loses touch with fighting.
