Shonen Jump Press Release
A joint venture between two of Japan's leading publishing companies on Wednesday unveiled plans to launch an English-language edition of "Shonen Jump," one of Japan's most popular comic books and a showcase for animated superstars like Dragon Ball.
Privately held Viz Communications, a U.S. unit of Japan's Shogakukan, and Tokyo-based Shueisha Inc. unveiled a special preview issue of the magazine at a comic book trade show in San Diego, calling it the first attempt to publish a mass-market English edition of one of Japan's hugely popular "manga."
The Japanese version of "Shonen Jump" sells some 3.4 million copies per week, mostly to boys and teens, and features series such as "Dragon Ball," "One Piece," and "Yug-gi-oh!," some of which have crossed over to American television. A single issue of the serialized weekly can run to 450 pages. Full story here.
