Starting a New Web site
Now that you've learned the basics of any type of web design, we will have to get you onto the Internet. So the only way you can do that is by getting a server, which
is basically some space on the Internet. It's like buying property, except on the Internet. And if you want a lot it comes at a slight cost. But there is free
space, it is however limited, and can not do too much. This is the perfect type of server for you. So you can either try a free server, some of which are located at
Geocities.com, or Angelfire, or Tripod, the list goes on, but those are the best types. These servers are free, however, there will be a pop-up window that advertises
every time someone visits your site. You can choose to either have a pop-up window, or an ad banner. So after you have signed up for one of the free hosting accounts,
you can upload to it. Which is where you will have to learn how to either upload manually, or learn to use an FTP program. Some Great programs exist, and i will
not go into listing all of them, But Dreamweaver is a great program since it has FTP and a web designing console all in one. Same with Front page. But most of the servers
should have the option to let you upload things through a web interface if you do not have an FTP Program yet.
Some Common Mistakes
After you're all settled in, you can read on and get informed on some of the common mistakes n00bit webmasters make when they enter the world of web design. First
of all if you make any type of site, make sure that the layout is really nice and clean-cut. Make it easy for the visitor to come and navigate/ read the content. Do
not over-obsess on the layout. I'm sure that the layout you are currently reading this on is a perfect example of the style. It is not pathetically crappy, but
it is very neat and straight to the point. You can have some nice effects, and a very flashy layout, but make sure you still don't take away from the convenience
of the visitor. If you over obsess with the layout then you will lose visitors because they will not know where to click, and what to do.
Another Common mistake amongst freshly opened sites is that they give out their FTP Info to almost all their staff, and then a week later everything is deleted. Then
they go around asking everyone what the heck happened. I got hacked. I suggest that you get to know your staff before you do anything. Especially give out your FTP info.
The best way to do it is just to have your staff send in the work and you put it up, and in the case that you're a corporate business, then you should probably overlook
this paragraph because you will have the staff working in the same building as you so you'd be able to get to know them pretty well.
A few more things, You should not get too many affiliates because that just doesn't looks too good to other sites who want to affiliate with you. You should also
NEVER copy content. Make your own content, and make it good quality. Make sure it has no spelling mistakes (I should talk) and get different things. Because if you
constantly offer the same stuff over and over again, then no one will see any reason in visiting your web site. If you have the same info and content as another web site
then what is the point in making a web site. Make your site bend around you not around someone else. Most people confuse being rivals with another site trying to
ascend them by having the same content as they have just better but you can also do it by having better content that is totally different then what they have. This
goes for products ideas, and offers.
Once important part of a web site is multimedia. If there is no multimedia, then you are officially considered an all info site. Which is perfectly fine, but I'm just
saying that multimedia helps in raising hits, and visits. If you have a lot then people will come and download it, because they want to see things that move, or
sound great. They get tired of surfing the net with still pictures, text and all that. You should have something that they can feast their eyes and ears on. Like Music
videos, or animated gifs, pictures or something of that sort. You can have free downloads of various entertainment, and things like that. Keep in mind though that too
much multimedia is not too great because it will use up all your bandwidth, and you will have your site closed down for the remainder of the month. So have a nice balance
of Multimedia, and content so that it is all good, and it all flows together.
One last piece of advice, and after this you are free to think and dream up anything you want. Get interactive. Make your site interactive, and get feedback from
the fans, and visitors. Having a tag board can swing either way because fans can say bad and good things about you, and having a forum is also pretty great. You can
have a fan section where fans can submit their fan art, and other things. There is no such thing as too much interaction. Even having a live chat program where people
can visit your site, and chat with each other live is not too bad. Make sure that you do not get hit hungry, and put like 50 pop-up and forced voting buttons leading
to top sites, and all just so that you can get popular, because people absolutely HATE that. And it doesn't matter if you are a reliable and great site, people DO NOT
like to have to be forced to vote. Make sure you protect your files from leechers, and have a great web mastering career, you have officially passed the course in starting
to be a webmaster. Go now and experience the challenges of the web. Some of which being that you will feel like quitting numerous times, but if you've got it in you
then you will find a way to somehow overcome it.
